Lake Lady best in Thelma Stakes

NEW ORLEANS - Trainer Steve Asmussen called Sunday's Thelma Stakes* (click here for chart) "a bridge" for his 3-year-old filly, Lake Lady. She's clearly crossed over to the other side now.

Making the jump from hyped allowance winner to stakes horses proved a minor obstacle for the vastly talented Lake Lady, who won the $75,000 Thelma Stakes convincingly despite being given a ride that was intended to impart valuable racing lessons rather than produce a blowout win.

Potential aplenty in this field

NEW ORLEANS - There are two allowance races on Fair Grounds's Monday card, but don't miss the maidens.

The sixth of 10 races here Monday, a six-furlong sprint for freshly turned 3-year-old colts, might well be the deepest maiden special weight race of this meet. Besides several horses who already have run well in the afternoon, it drew a pair of impressive schooling race winners as well as a first-time starter from the Ronnie Werner stable, a haven of precocious horses.

Monarchos on target for Donn

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos* (click here for PP's) worked six furlongs from the gate under regular jockey Jorge Chavez on Saturday as he continues to train well for his 4-year-old debut in the Grade 1 Donn Handicap on Feb. 9.

"He hasn't started in six months and he'll need a gate work somewhere along the line, so I thought I'd just get it out of the way and work him an easy six furlongs today," said Monarchos's trainer, John Ward.
