On the Game in right spot for local bow

MIAMI - Three months ago the connections of On the Game thought enough of him to test him against the likes of Western Pride and Macho Uno in the Grade 2 Ohio Derby. On Monday the 3-year-old On the Game finds himself in a much cushier spot when he makes his local debut going a mile in an optional claiming race.

On the Game won three of his first four starts, all at his home base at Woodbine, to earn himself a berth in the Ohio Derby. But he found the competition a bit too much to handle, finishing sixth and last after flashing early speed.

Three-time chalk loser tries again

It doesn't matter if the setting is Maryland, Pennsylvania, or Delaware. No matter where Lorline runs, she's almost always the favorite.

A 5-year-old mare trained by Michael Dickinson, Lorline has been the public choice in seven of her last 10 starts, including each of her four most recent races. Returning off a seven-week layoff, Lorline is likely to be favored again in Monday's $25,000 Deck the Halls Handicap, a six-furlong overnight race for fillies and mares at Philadelphia Park. First post for the Christmas Eve card is 12:15 p.m., 10 minutes earlier than usual.

Prather returns Dec. 31 with a healed shoulder

P. Lang
Kris Prather, who has won 130 races this year in less than four months of riding, returns to the saddle on New Year's Eve at Turfway Park.

Kris Prather is going to celebrate New Year's Eve her way.

Prather, the apprentice rider who posted spectacular numbers last winter at Turfway Park before being injured, is scheduled to return to action at the Florence, Ky., track, on Dec. 31.

Prather has been sidelined since August to allow her surgically repaired shoulder to heal properly. The layoff was the second lengthy one of the year for Prather, who also was inactive for some 2 1/2 months after injuring her knees in a starting-gate accident at Turfway on March 17.

Pletcher barn ends 0-for-17 drought

NEW ORLEANS - Trainer Todd Pletcher finally broke through with a win here Thursday, when Getadderit scored by a length in a first-level turf allowance race. It was a long time coming. When Thursday's action ended, Pletcher's record at Fair Grounds was 18-1-5-0, but at least it included a win.

"Nobody likes to start off like that," said George Weaver, Pletcher's longtime assistant who is supervising the Fair Grounds string. "But you can't get all worked up about things and start second-guessing. You just have to stick with your plan."
