A vote of confidence for No More Chads

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Trainer Chuck Simon always knew that No More Chads had tremendous turf potential, but minor injuries as a yearling and 2-year-old restricted the colt from running his best. So when Simon entered the horse in a maiden $20,000 claiming race at Fair Grounds this February in his second career start, he was taking a shot that the horse wouldn't be claimed.

"I knew he had a lot of ability, but I didn't know if we could keep him sound," Simon said. "We were taking a big shot in the race, but sometimes horses like that never come around."

AUBURN, Wash. - There are three stakes winners among the six 3-year-olds entered in Monday's $45,000 Pepsi-Cola Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs, but they will all take a back seat in the wagering to Flying Notes, an impressive winner of two allowance races from as many starts at the Emerald Downs meeting.

Morey sad to see 'Fellow' go

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Trainer Bill Morey Jr. had a heavy heart but also a heavier wallet last week when he shipped Mellow Fellow from Bay Meadows to his new home in Southern California.

Mellow Fellow, a 7-year-old gelding, was purchased privately by Sid and Jenny Craig from owners Morey and Ronelle Heller. He will now be trained by Bill Spawr.

Mellow Fellow has won six straight races, including the $198,750 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint in his last start on May 11. Earlier this spring, he was named the horse of the meeting at Golden Gate Fields.

Malabar Gold: Fast and relaxed

ELMONT, N.Y. - Though trainer Ron Ellis was impressed with the way Malabar Gold relaxed winning his last start, it may be his brilliant speed that serves Malabar Gold best in Monday's $100,000 Jaipur Handicap at Belmont Park.

The Jaipur, a Grade 3 race run at seven furlongs on turf, tops the undercard action on Monday's 10-race Metropolitan Handicap card. Also Monday, all patrons will receive a Seattle Slew T-shirt commemorating the 25th anniversary of his Triple Crown, with paid admission while supplies last.

Best of the Rest, in top form, can get his graded win

MIAMI - Despite his many accomplishments and laundry list of victories, Best of the Rest has never won a graded stakes. That situation should be remedied Monday at Calder when he starts as the 123-pound highweight and likely favorite against three rivals in the $100,000 Memorial Day Handicap.

The Memorial Day, which was awarded Grade 3 status for the first time this year, tops a 12-race holiday program that begins at 12:25 p.m.

Rejuvenated Mighty Beau has become a Turf Monster

Less than six months ago, Mighty Beau was losing in short dirt sprints for nonwinners-of-three lifetime at places like Charles Town and Penn National. Now he's good enough to run competitively against older horses in stakes races at Keeneland and Churchill Downs.

After experiencing only modest success sprinting on dirt, the 3-year-old Mighty Beau has blossomed since switching to the turf in April. He makes his first start for new connections in Monday's $100,000 Turf Monster Handicap, a five-furlong turf sprint at Philadelphia Park, in Bensalem, PA.

Hawthorne: Maliziosa prevails

STICKNEY, Ill. - She was trapped behind horses on the far turn, shuffled back to last turning for home, taken to the rail, then swerved far outside in midstretch - imagine how far Maliziosa would have won by if she'd gotten a good trip. As it was, Maliziosa powered through the final furlong to win the $100,000 Summertime Promise Stakes by four lengths at Hawthorne.
