Posse can prove debut not a fluke

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Such was the power of his career debut that Posse was bet down to 3-5 in the Three Chimneys Juvenile, a Kentucky Derby Day sidelight that perennially attracts a gaggle of impressive maiden winners from near and far.

Alas, Posse could manage no better than a third-place finish in the field of 13 in the Three Chimneys, finishing 1 3/4 lengths behind the victorious filly, Holiday Runner. But when Posse returns to action on Monday in the $150,000 Kentucky Breeders' Cup Stakes at Churchill Downs, there is a distinct likelihood that the colt will make amends.

Irish Prize needs things just so

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Gary Stevens has very little margin for error when he rides Irish Prize, the veteran turf miler.

"He doesn't like to be in front too early and doesn't like to be in front too long," Stevens said.

Irish Prize, a 6-year-old gelding, does not draw off when he reaches the front but wins by a nose, head, or neck. The style creates added drama for his backers and makes Stevens's job more difficult. On Monday, Stevens's timing will be on display when he rides Irish Prize in the $500,000 Shoemaker Breeders' Cup Mile at Hollywood Park.

Fast pair start anew in Barrera

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Time to regroup. Or, as Royal Moro's trainer, Craig Dollase, said, "gain a new lease on life."

Royal Moro, along with fellow onetime Derby hopefuls Fonz's and Captain Squire, comebacker Kamsack, improving Raven Power, and longshot Ecstatic will sprint seven furlongs Monday in the Grade 2 Lazaro Barrera Memorial Stakes, the first of 10 races at Hollywood Park. Last year, Squirtle Squirt won the $150,000 Barrera en route to a victory in the Breeders' Cup Sprint and an Eclipse Award.

Californian field begins to take shape

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Pie N Burger and Momentum, the first two finishers from Friday's seventh race, are likely to resurface in the $500,000 Californian Stakes at Hollywood Park on June 15.

The Californian, a prep to the $750,000 Hollywood Gold Cup on July 14, is expected to include Milwaukee Brew, unraced since winning the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap in March.

Pie N Burger, who has bounced between allowance races and stakes in the last year, held off a stubborn Momentum to win Friday's race by a neck, finishing 1 1/16 miles in 1:41.83.

A vote of confidence for No More Chads

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Trainer Chuck Simon always knew that No More Chads had tremendous turf potential, but minor injuries as a yearling and 2-year-old restricted the colt from running his best. So when Simon entered the horse in a maiden $20,000 claiming race at Fair Grounds this February in his second career start, he was taking a shot that the horse wouldn't be claimed.

"I knew he had a lot of ability, but I didn't know if we could keep him sound," Simon said. "We were taking a big shot in the race, but sometimes horses like that never come around."

Flying Notes looks fastest in sprint

AUBURN, Wash. - There are three stakes winners among the six 3-year-olds entered in Monday's $45,000 Pepsi-Cola Handicap at 6 1/2 furlongs, but they will all take a back seat in the wagering to Flying Notes, an impressive winner of two allowance races from as many starts at the Emerald Downs meeting.

Morey sad to see 'Fellow' go

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Trainer Bill Morey Jr. had a heavy heart but also a heavier wallet last week when he shipped Mellow Fellow from Bay Meadows to his new home in Southern California.

Mellow Fellow, a 7-year-old gelding, was purchased privately by Sid and Jenny Craig from owners Morey and Ronelle Heller. He will now be trained by Bill Spawr.

Mellow Fellow has won six straight races, including the $198,750 Bay Meadows Breeders' Cup Sprint in his last start on May 11. Earlier this spring, he was named the horse of the meeting at Golden Gate Fields.

Malabar Gold: Fast and relaxed

ELMONT, N.Y. - Though trainer Ron Ellis was impressed with the way Malabar Gold relaxed winning his last start, it may be his brilliant speed that serves Malabar Gold best in Monday's $100,000 Jaipur Handicap at Belmont Park.

The Jaipur, a Grade 3 race run at seven furlongs on turf, tops the undercard action on Monday's 10-race Metropolitan Handicap card. Also Monday, all patrons will receive a Seattle Slew T-shirt commemorating the 25th anniversary of his Triple Crown, with paid admission while supplies last.

Best of the Rest, in top form, can get his graded win

MIAMI - Despite his many accomplishments and laundry list of victories, Best of the Rest has never won a graded stakes. That situation should be remedied Monday at Calder when he starts as the 123-pound highweight and likely favorite against three rivals in the $100,000 Memorial Day Handicap.

The Memorial Day, which was awarded Grade 3 status for the first time this year, tops a 12-race holiday program that begins at 12:25 p.m.
