Who likes soft turf?

Horsephotos
Intercontinental, exercising Wednesday with Jose Cuevas, is the likely favorite in the Diana.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - To say that the field for Saturday's $500,000 at Saratoga is accomplished would be an understatement.

The seven fillies and mares entered in the Grade 1 Diana have $3,891,101 in combined earnings and have won 14 graded stakes among them. Three others, Buy the Sport, Nevermore, and Alchemist were entered for the main track only.

The Grade 1 Diana, at 1 1/8 miles on the turf, shares the card with the Grade 1 Test, a seven-furlong dirt race for 3-year-old fillies. The Diana and Test will be telecast on ESPN2 between 4 and 5 p.m. Eastern.

If pace is fast, 'Society' could score in Test

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Hall of Fame trainer Allen Jerkens says reminds him a little bit of November Snow. When it comes to the Grade 1 Test Stakes, which will be run for the 79th time Saturday at Saratoga, that comparison is noteworthy.

Jerkens won his only Test in 1992 with November Snow, who ran poorly in a one-turn route at Belmont Park before winning the Test from off the pace at odds of 9-2. Society Selection enters the Test off a poor sixth-place finish in the Mother Goose Stakes - a one-turn route at Belmont - and should relish shortening up to seven furlongs.

Luzzi begins long road back

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Jockey Mike Luzzi will be out of action for at least eight weeks, and perhaps longer, after breaking his right leg in a spill Wednesday at Saratoga.

Luzzi underwent surgery Wednesday night, during which Dr. Richard Alfred inserted a rod and two screws into the leg. Luzzi, 34, was to be released from the Albany Medical Center Hospital on Friday and hoped to begin therapy in six to eight weeks.

Any of five can step up and shine

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - There is not even a sixth man for the Washington Park Handicap on Saturday at Arlington, but this starting five could go somewhere.

It begins with Olmodavor, fresh off a second-place finish in the Grade 1 Hollywood Gold Cup, and also includes Colonial Colony, who upset the Grade 1 Stephen Foster Handicap last month at Churchill Downs, paying $137.20 to win; Congrats, who is floating just beneath the national graded stakes radar; Eye of the Tiger, who is Grade 1 placed; and The Lady's Groom, who has earned a quarter-million dollars this season.

'Bourbon' looks tough to run down

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Victoria Stakes runner-up Wholelottabourbon is the one to catch in Saturday's $134,000 Colin Stakes, a six-furlong sprint for 2-year-olds at Woodbine.

Wholelottabourbon, based at Fort Erie with trainer Nick Gonzalez, ran bravely on the front end when he made his debut in a maiden special for Ontario-sired runners June 13, winning by daylight over Moonshine Justice, who came back to take the Clarendon Stakes. His five-furlong clocking of 59.60 seconds translated into a Beyer Figure of 73.

New rider, same plan: Go for lead

DEL MAR, Calif. - Any doubts about the brilliance of were answered when she won the Flawlessly Stakes by five lengths at Hollywood Park on July 3. She bowled along through a decent pace and kicked clear.

The convincing victory makes Miss Vegas a strong favorite to win her sixth stakes in Saturday's $150,000 San Clemente Handicap over a mile on turf for 3-year-old fillies at Del Mar.

The only change in trainer Bobby Frankel's strategy will be a new rider: David Flores replaces an injured Alex Solis, who suffered a cracked vertebra in a spill on July 23.

It's answer time for Azeri

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - There were a lot of raised eyebrows when owner Michael Paulson elected to bring the two-time champion mare Azeri back to the races this year.

Through 2003, Azeri won 14 of 16 starts, earned more than $3 million, and was named 2002 Horse of the Year, the first female to earn that distinction since Lady's Secret in 1986.

Afleet Alex takes Sanford

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - After watching Afleet Alex win his first two races at Delaware Park by a combined 23 1/4 lengths, trainer Tim Ritchey shipped the 2-year-old colt to Saratoga for Thursday's $150,000 "to find out what you really have."

What Ritchey and owner Chuck Zacney's Cash is King Stable have is a potential star.

Under Jeremy Rose, Afleet Alex toyed with a seemingly deep field, making a four-wide sweep around the turn and pulling away in the stretch to a 5 1/4-length victory in the Grade 2 Sanford. Flamenco finished second, a neck in front of Consolidator.
