Hour of Justice in peak form

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Hour of Justice, a handy winner of an allowance prep last time out, should be favored in Monday's Grade 3, $167,550 Royal North Handicap, a six-furlong turf sprint for fillies and mares at Woodbine.

Hour of Justice, victorious in the 2003 Alywow Stakes, has lost only twice in seven career starts. Owned by Stronach Stable, Hour of Justice finished second to Grade 3 winner Shaconage in the 2003 Ontario Colleen Handicap, and was also second to the talented sprinter Winter Garden in last year's Star Shoot Stakes.

Shanghied vs. Albarino in derby

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Shanghied and Albarino, the top two contenders, will be at opposite ends of the starting gate Monday for the 56th running of $100,000 Manitoba Lotteries Derby at Assiniboia Downs. Shanghied drew the rail and Albarino the outside in the field of seven 3-year-olds.

The 1 1/8-mile Manitoba Derby is the province's premier race and the highlight of the biggest day of the meeting. Monday's card also features three $40,000 supporting stakes: the six-furlong Winnipeg Futurity, the one-mile Wheat City, and the one-mile Jack Hardy.

Cup Classic boils down to top two

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Although six horses have been entered in the $65,000 British Columbia Cup Classic, the 1 1/8-mile feature race on British Columbia Cup Day at Hastings on Monday, the race really shapes up as a match race between the 2003 local horse of the year, Roscoe Pito, and the older handicap champ for the past three years, Lord Nelson.

The edge has to go to Lord Nelson. After all, they have met three times this year, and in all three races Lord Nelson has finished in front of Roscoe Pito.

Win would give 'Deputy' sprint crown

EDMONTON, Alberta - Deputy Country, who has won the first two stakes for older horses at this meet, has a pair of 2004 Alberta titles in his sights as he heads a field of six in the Northlands Sun Sprint Championship at Northlands Park on Monday.

With a victory in the holiday feature, Deputy Country can virtually clinch the circuit's sprinting crown. The only horse who could deny him that honor is Dance Me Free, who won the Stampede Park Sprint Championship.

Pair of 3-year-olds with bright future

FORT ERIE, Ontario - Two maturing 3-year-old geldings, Domascas Consort and Sailor Knot, head the Civic Holiday, the second of a pair of $40,000, 1 1/16-mile stakes Monday at Fort Erie. Both races are restricted to horses who have started at the meet at least three times.

Domascas Consort, trained by Bob Williams, upset 1-20 favorite Forever Grand in the three-horse H.J. Addison Jr. here on July 11. The 7 1/4-length score was just Domascas Consort's second lifetime win in eight starts.

Outsiders pose serious threat to local crowd

WINNIPEG, Manitoba - Local horses will have to be at their best if they hope to win any of three stakes races on the Manitoba Derby undercard at Assiniboia Downs.

Canterbury Park invaders El Gran Seville and Tuff Justice look like the ones to beat in the $40,000 Winnipeg Futurity, for 2-year-olds at six furlongs.

El Gran Seville won his maiden two starts ago against special weight company, then was third in the Canterbury Park Juvenile after a poor beginning.

Star fillies in supporting cast

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Two of the best fillies to have ever raced in British Columbia will run in separate races on the B.C. Cup Day card Monday.

The 3-year-old fillies division of the Stallion Stakes should be a coronation for Regal Red. In the B.C. Cup Distaff, Dancewithavixen will be the favorite, but she could have her hands full with a very tough Victor's Secret.

Pleasantly Perfect embarks on final mission

Horsephotos
Pleasantly Perfect meets seven foes in the San Diego Handicap at Del Mar on Sunday, his first start since winning the Dubai World Cup in March.

DEL MAR, Calif. - He is not the richest horse in North American racing history. He may never be. It may never matter. Because even if Pleasantly Perfect cannot reach Cigar's all-time earnings record, there are other attainable goals for Pleasantly Perfect to race toward.

Repeat no sure thing for Sightseek

Horsephotos
Sightseek, with Jose Cuevas riding, exercises Friday at Saratoga in preparation for her start in Sunday's Go for Wand. Among her five opponents will be Azeri, twice the champion older female, and Storm Flag Flying, who was champion at 2.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - A year ago, dominated the Go for Wand Handicap, beating what could best be described as a modest field by 11 1/2 lengths.

Sunday, the pickings won't be nearly as easy when Sightseek tries to become just the third mare to win back-to-back runnings of the $250,000 Go for Wand at Saratoga. Sightseek heads a six-horse field that includes two-time defending champion mare Azeri, 2002 champion 2-year-old filly Storm Flag Flying, Grade 1 winner Mayo on the Side, Molly Pitcher winner La Reason, and the underrated New York-bred Board Elligible.
