Grande Diablo wires Franks Memorial

CARENCRO, La. - Grande Diablo broke sharply under Jamie Theriot and did not look back Saturday night in winning the John Franks Memorial Sales Stakes at Evangeline Downs by four lengths. A Galloping Ghost turned in a modest rally to finish second followed by Miss Excavate.

Lenatareese rallies to take Audubon Oaks

One race after winning an allowance at Churchill Downs with a last to first rally, Lenatareese utilized a similar style to win Saturday's $75,000 Audubon Oaks at Ellis Park.

The tactics were not by design. Lenatareese broke slowly, which forced jockey Brice Blanc to place her at the back of the pack. He let her relax in 11th as Victoire Bataille set quick fractions of 46.19 and 1:10.30 in the 1 1/16-mile turf contest.

Del Mar carryover reaches $717,342

DEL MAR, Calif. - A two-day carryover of $717,342 highlights at Del Mar, a card that features the return of top handicap star Pleasantly Perfect after a four-month break.

Sunday's program starts at 2 p.m. The pick six covers the fourth through ninth races.

There are only a few changes in the pick six, which includes a foreign shipper in the first leg that will be a key on many tickets.

Comebacking Halo Cat captures Finley Handicap

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Halo Cat ($5.80), part of a favored three-horse entry, made his first start in 13 months and rallied along the rail to capture the $42,930 Ernest Finley Handicap at the Sonoma County Fair on Saturday.

Halo Cat, breaking from the outside in the field of eight, beat defending champion My Captain by 1 1/4 lengths, covering six furlongs in 1:07.93. He had not run since finishing fourth in the Sam Whiting at Pleasanton on June 29, 2003.

Sweet Win takes San Clemente

DEL MAR, Calif. - Sweet Win won her stakes debut in Saturday's $150,000 San Clemente Handicap at Del Mar, rallying through the stretch to catch the heavily favored Miss Vegas.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, Sweet Win ($18.60) finished a head in front of Miss Vegas, running a mile on turf in 1:34.11. The Grade 2 San Clemente Handicap was restricted to 3-year-old fillies.

Miss Vegas, sent off at 2-5, set an early pace of 23.54 and 46.50 seconds, racing a length or two in front of Bonaire. The pair was eight lengths clear on the backstretch.

Alpha Capo captures Bossier City Handicap

Bossier City, La - Donnie Meche took advantage of a narrow opening in upper straight to split foes with Alpha Capo to capture Saturday's Bossier City Handicap. A late rally by Social King came up a head short as that one finished second followed by favorite and 120 pound highweight No Place Like It.

Eye of the Tiger holds off Olmodavor to win Saturday's Washington Park Handicap at Arlington Park.

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Kiaran McLaughlin's afterthought was a good thought.

It was a couple weeks ago McLaughlin nominated Eye of the Tiger to the Washington Park Handicap, but only when he found out the race was coming up with a short field did McLaughlin decide to come. Eye of the Tiger was sent by plane from New York this week, and Saturday at Arlington he scored the richest win of his career, beating Olmodavor by a head in the Grade 2, $350,000 .

Frankel says Venturi is ready to go

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Bobby Frankel will seek his third victory in the last five runnings of Saratoga's Lake George Handicap on Monday when he sends out against nine others in the 1 1/16-mile turf race for 3-year-old fillies.

Frankel purchased Venturi for Edmund Gann after she won the Group 3 Park Stakes last Sept. 21 in Ireland. Before that, she defeated males in a maiden race. While training in Southern California, Venturi developed a chip in an ankle that required surgery. She has been in training for several months, and Frankel believes she is ready for this assignment.

Indian Country stretching out little by little

DEL MAR, Calif. - With an eye toward the $75,000 El Cajon Stakes next month, trainer Bob Baffert has entered in a $59,000 optional claiming sprint at Del Mar on Monday.

A victory could lead to a start in the restricted El Cajon, for 3-year-olds over a mile on Sept. 3.

"I'd like to stretch him out," Baffert said.

The optional claimer is one of two feature races on Monday's eight-race program. The program includes a $58,000 allowance race for fillies and mares over 1 1/16 miles on turf.
