Tap Day takes shot at Haskell

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Tap Day joined the Haskell Invitational lineup Wednesday, increasing the likely field to seven for Monmouth Park's Grade 1, $1 million stakes for 3-year-olds on Sunday.

Tap Day, who will be ridden by Jose Velez Jr., will face Lion Heart, Rock Hard Ten, Wimplestiltskin, My Snookie's Boy, and the Nick Zito-trained duo of Royal Assault and Pie's Prospect in the 1 1/8-mile centerpiece event of the Monmouth meet.

Tap Day, trained by Mark Hennig, joins My Snookie's Boy as the only Monmouth-based horses in the race.

'Liz on Polk' can rebound from last

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - The second starter for trainer Jodie Sinclair could be one of the best horses Frank Calabrese owns - with an emphasis on could.

, a 3-year-old A.P. Indy filly produced by Calabrese's Grade 1 winner Silver Maiden, won her career debut last fall at Hawthorne by more than four lengths, but before she could develop further, a leg injury took her out of training for several months. Hard-used from the rail in her July 17 comeback race at Arlington, Liz on Polk Street wound up third in a six-horse field, beaten more than six lengths.

Seattle Fitz gallops Wednesday at Saratoga in preparation for Saturday's Whitney.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It was only 11 weeks ago that Purge was considered among the elite 3-year-olds in the nation following his devastatingly easy victory in the Grade 2 Peter Pan Stakes.

When trainer Todd Pletcher indicated he wasn't going to run Purge back in the Belmont Stakes, he received plenty of cards, letters, and phone calls urging him to reconsider. Eventually, Pletcher changed his mind and entered Purge in the Belmont.

Home away from home at the Spa

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - When trainer Bob Baffert runs horses in two big stakes at Saratoga this weekend, he will do so with the assistance of Tonja Terranova.

Terranova, with the help of her husband, John, who is a trainer, has been overseeing Baffert's East Coast division for several years. When Baffert ships horses from California to run in New York and Florida, Tonja cares for them.

Cal-bred sprint king returns

DEL MAR, Calif. - Don'tsell-meshort has earned nearly $400,000 by dominating the California-bred sprint division in the last year. His four wins, including three stakes, have come in restricted company.

Friday at Del Mar, Don'tsellmeshort will be favored to win his fourth stakes in the $100,000 Real Good Deal Stakes for statebred 3-year-olds. A win in the seven-furlong race would give his stable a much-needed boost of enthusiasm.

Lone Arrow works for Breeders'

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Lone Arrow worked five furlongs here Wednesday in preparation for Sunday's $500,000 Breeders' Stakes, the 1 1/2-mile turf race that is the final leg of the Canadian Triple Crown.

There will no Canadian Triple Crown winner this year as Niigon and A Bit O'Gold traded one-two finishes in the first two legs, the 1 1/4-mile Queen's Plate here June 27 and the 1 3/16-mile Prince of Wales at Fort Erie July 18.

A Bit O'Gold is slated to run in the Breeders', while Niigon is headed to Saratoga for Sunday's Jim Dandy.

Primed for a repeat

HENDERSON, Ky. - Bare Necessities, the millionaire mare who was an easy winner of the Gardenia Handicap last year, was scheduled to arrive here Thursday from Chicago to defend her title in the Gardenia on Saturday.

Bare Necessities will be seeking her first win in the care of veteran trainer Frank Kirby. This is her third race for him.

Kirby said the 5-year-old gray has been training exceptionally well at Arlington Park and is primed for a top effort in the Grade 3 Gardenia. Two workouts back, Bare Necessities posted a bullet six-furlong workout at Arlington in 1:13.

Wolfson barn packed with hot fillies

MIAMI - Trainer Marty Wolfson continues to have a way with the ladies.

On Monday, Adobe Gold rose to the top of the local 3-year-old filly division with an easy 7 1/4-length victory in the Mia's Hope Stakes. On Friday, Pampered Princess will go postward for Wolfson as one of the favorites in the $40,000 Precious Feather Stakes for fillies and mares. And next Monday, Stay Forever will have her final work before departing for Chicago to compete in Arlington Park's Grade 1 Beverly D. on Aug. 14.
