'House' tries to avoid trouble

DEL MAR, Calif. - Head of the House and Spencer's Magic were dueling through the stretch of a turf sprint at Hollywood Park last month when Spencer's Magic inexplicably ducked inward and unseated jockey Alex Bisono.

The incident in the July 14 race affected Head of the House, who was bumped hard by a rival, appeared to lose his momentum, and finished three-quarters of a length behind the winner, McManus.

Monday at Del Mar, meet again in a $54,000 optional claimer at five furlongs on turf for statebreds.

Valenzuela vows to fight suspension

DEL MAR, Calif. - Jockey Patrick Valenzuela vowed on Friday to fight his suspension for failing to take a hair-follicle test last month, but is unlikely to resume riding until the appeals process is played out.

On Friday, Del Mar stewards Ingrid Fermin, George Slender, and Tom Ward suspended Valenzuela through Dec. 31, the rest of the term of his conditional license; denied him access to racetrack grounds; and recommended to the California Horse Racing Board that Valenzuela "not be considered for future licensing in any capacity."

Destruel goes from canceled to competitive

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Closing day at the Sonoma County Fair on Monday will bring out eight of northern California's fastest sprinting fillies and mares in the $40,000-added Elie Destruel Handicap at six furlongs.

The Destruel was canceled last year when it attracted only four entrants, but this year's field is so solid, it scared some possible entrants away.

Eavesdropper gets first stakes win

HANCOCK COUNTY, W.Va. - Eavesdropper always had an attractive catalog page, being a half-brother to A.P. Indy and Summer Squall. Now he has an accomplished race record to go with it. He won his first stakes on Saturday in the $85,000 Harvey Arneault Memorial Handicap on West Virginia Derby Day at Mountaineer Park.

Well ridden by Heberto Castillo, Eavesdropper stalked the pace in fourth, as Crossing Point and Calends set quick fractions of 21.91 and 44.74 seconds while contesting the pace.

Im a Dixie Girl dominates field in Colleen

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Im a Dixie Girl romped to an 8 1/4-length win in the $60,000 Saturday afternoon at Monmouth Park.

The Colleen is the traditional prep for Monmouth's top 2-year-old filly stakes, the $75,000 Sorority on Sept. 4.

Im a Dixie Girl ($5) made her debut for trainer Bruce Levine a winning one. She won one of three starts for Bernie Flint at Churchill Downs and was fourth in her prior race, the Grade 3 Debutante.

Stallion Stakes series begins Saturday

Caught with four feet off the ground, Caballero Negro appears to float to the finish line in winning the $40,000 Silver Season overnight stakes at Calder on Saturday. Manoel Cruz was the winning jockey for trainer Mario Morales.

MIAMI - Calder's annual rite of summer, the Florida Stallion Stakes, begins this week with the six-furlong Dr. Fager Stakes and its filly counterpart, the Desert Vixen. The series continues three weeks later with the seven-furlong Affirmed and Susan's Girl divisions. After an unprecedented seven-week sabbatical, the series will conclude Oct. 23 with the $400,000 In Reality and My Dear Girl Stakes, both of which will be decided at 1 1/16 miles.

Woodbine: One for Rose beats males

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - One for Rose, last year's champion older filly or mare in Canada, beat the boys in the $136,700 .

Emile Ramsammy rode One for Rose, who tracked front-running Norfolk Knight through moderate fractions in the 1 1/16-mile event. One for Rose hit the front at the three-eighths pole and drew off in the stretch for a five-length win over favored Mark One.

Hydrogen was third in the seven-horse field, and Mobil was scratched. The final time was 1:44.34 seconds.

Fair Grounds, horsemen settle lawsuit

Fair Grounds Race Course and the Louisiana Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association reached an out-of-court settlement of a 10-year-old lawsuit late Friday night in New Orleans, averting a bankruptcy court auction that could have led to the track's sale.

Emerald Downs cancels after one race

AUBURN, Wash. - Friday night's program at Emerald Downs was canceled after the first of eight scheduled races. The jockeys declined to ride, citing unsafe track conditions caused by heavy rain squalls.

Fans in attendance received rain checks good for any day of live racing at Emerald Downs.
