Meadowlands Cup up $100k

OCEANPORT, N.J. - The Grade 2 Meadowlands Breeders' Cup gets a solid purse increase and four graded stakes return this fall at Monmouth Park and The Meadowlands Racetrack.

The New Jersey Sports & Exposition Authority finally released the stakes schedule for the post-Labor Day period at Monmouth through Sept. 26 and the Meadowlands meet from Oct. 1 through Nov. 13.

My Sweet Heart back after long layoff

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - You will not have to wait long for the highest-class race at Arlington Park on Wednesday. But for the best horse in it, the wait has been long, indeed.

It has been 10 months since a jockey was given a leg up on My Sweet Heart and the filly sent was out to race. She makes her comeback in Wednesday's first race, a second-level Illinois-bred allowance at one mile on dirt.

No stakes in secretary's last meet

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Tom Doutrich will bow out after one year as the racing secretary at Bay Meadows and Golden Gate Fields after the Bay Meadows Fair, which opens Wednesday.

Doutrich resigned and will return to being a jockey agent for Chance Rollins after the two-week fair meeting, the toughest meet of the year for any racing secretary.

"I didn't want to be the racing secretary for over 200 days a year," Doutrich said. "If you look at most racing secretaries around the nation, you'll see they do the job only 100 or so days a year."

Popular champ Black Ruby may hang 'em up

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Although she has been without a victory on the fair circuit this year, Black Ruby, the champion racing mule, has been perhaps the circuit's biggest attraction.

But now a lingering injury is threatening to end her career.

A 12-year-old, Black Ruby was not even entered in Sunday's Santa Rosa Mule Championship, which was won by Sarah Nelson, with Taz second and Smoking Joe third after a poor start.

Thresher best in Cavonnier Juvenile Stakes

SANTA ROSA, Calif. - Heavily favored Thresher ($3) had no problems defeating six rivals to win the $54,595 Cavonnier Juvenile Stakes at the Sonoma County Fair on Sunday.

Despite an incident in the gate that forced Sharp Strider to scratch and the rest of the field to be taken out of the gate and reloaded, Thresher was not bothered. He broke alertly and held the lead despite a challenge from Game Boy Johnny down the backstretch.
