Pastoral fair ready to race

FERNDALE, Calif. - For jockey Victor Miranda, few things are more enjoyable than competing in the Humboldt County Fair, which opens a 10-day run Thursday.

Racing in the picturesque Victorian village of Ferndale truly has a country fair atmosphere. Racing here hasn't changed that much since the first meeting held here in 1896.

Fair manager Stuart Titus looks forward to a good meeting, with improvements to the racing surface that make the track "the best for day one that we've ever had." With an increase in overnight purses, Titus expects larger fields, too.

Santa Rosa: Our Mango wins Destruel

Trainer Steve Specht said he was "sweating bullets" seeking a victory in his hometown, and he accomplished that when Our Mango ($28.40) got a perfect trip along the rail to win the $51,895 Elie Destruel Handicap on Monday, closing day at the Sonoma County Fair in Santa Rosa.

"When Christmas Time scratched and we ended up on the rail, I was a little concerned because my mare has just enough speed that she might have gotten trapped, but she was also on the best part of the track," Specht said.

Martin duo both in it to win it

SAN MATEO, Calif. - For several weeks, trainer R.L. Martin has tried unsuccessfully to enter Credentialed in a race.

So Thursday at the Bay Meadows Fair, he did what many trainers do to make a race go, but with a twist.

He entered not only Credentialed in the day's feature, a $20,000 claimer at six furlongs, but also Spectacular Milli. That brought the total of entrants in the race for 3-year-old fillies to five, and it was carded.

Fine-tuning Britt's Jules

After setting a quick pace in Saturday night's Grade 3, $600,000 West Virginia Derby, Britt's Jules might get an equipment makeover for the Grade 2, $500,000 Super Derby next month at Louisiana Downs.

Co-owner and trainer Eric Guillot plans to work Britt's Jules without blinkers, and might remove them from the colt for the Super Derby, which will be run on Sept. 25.

"We'll see if we can get him to relax a little bit," said Guillot.
