Pat Day aboard 'Indian'

AUBURN, Wash. - Hall of Fame jockey Pat Day will ride 2-year-old Indian Weaver in Sunday's $50,000 WTBA Lads Stakes at Emerald Downs.

Day is at Emerald to serve as the featured speaker at a dinner after the races to benefit the track chaplaincy. He will ride two mounts on the 10-race card.

Indian Weaver ran second in a pair of maiden special weight races in northern California before shipping to local trainer Frank Lucarelli's barn for the colt and gelding division of the Northwest Stallion Stakes on Aug. 7.

Storm Flag Flying catches Azeri in Personal Ensign

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - It took a little more than two minutes to make up for nearly two years of frustration for Storm Flag Flying.

Taking advantage of a hot pace and a questionable ride by jockey Pat Day aboard Azeri, Storm Flag Flying collared that rival inside the eighth pole and edged away in deep stretch to win Friday's Grade 1, $400,000 by 1 1/4 lengths before 22,095 at Saratoga. Azeri, the 3-5 favorite, was second by a half-length over Nevermore. Board Elligible and Roar Emotion completed the order of finish.

Tapit works, likely for Pa. Derby

Prospects look good for Tapit, the Wood Memorial winner, to make his return to the races in the Grade 2, $750,000 Pennsylvania Derby on Sept. 6 at Philadelphia Park.

On Friday at Delaware Park, Tapit breezed seven furlongs in 1:27 under regular rider Ramon Dominguez. According to David Fiske, the racing manager for owner Ron Winchell, Tapit began his breeze five lengths behind stablemate Reflector and finished two or three lengths ahead of him.

Deal with horsemen approved

A federal bankruptcy court judge on Friday approved a $25 million settlement between Fair Grounds Race Course and the Louisiana Horsemen's Benevolent and Protective Association. The court deferred dismissing Fair Grounds's pending Chapter 11 bankruptcy case, though, and did not rule on a proposed partnership between Fair Grounds and Mike Pegram.

OCEANPORT, N.J. - Trainer Jamie Woodington has a fervent plea for Sunday and the second annual New Jersey Thoroughbred Festival at Monmouth Park.

"Please, let it not rain," said Woodington.

She has an entry of in the $100,000 Jersey Breeders Turf Highweight, one of five stakes on an afternoon of 11 races devoted exclusively to New Jersey-breds.

The Jersey Breeders at 1 1/16 miles offers a rare opportunity for the statebreds to run on the grass, and Woodington would hate to see it moved off the turf.

Is Whenthedoveflies traveling a furlong too far?

MIAMI - At five furlongs on the turf, Whenthedoveflies has established herself as the fastest horse in south Florida. But even trainer Kirk Ziadie isn't sure what to expect when he sends Whenthedoveflies six furlongs against 10 other fillies and mares in Sunday's $40,000 Golden Or Stakes.

McCabe comes up strong

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Sunday's Earlene McCabe Derby at the State Fair, a six-furlong race that drew a field of seven 3-year-olds, has come up quite strong.

"The last couple years it hasn't come up as deep," said trainer Jamey Thomas, whose Bailey's Yodeler has won 6 of 7 career starts, including his past five, as he has moved up from the $6,250 claiming ranks.

Bailey's Yodeler has his share of physical problems, but his gameness cannot be overlooked.

"What works for this horse is that he's so relaxed," Thomas said. "He's push button.

Southern Beau draws sharp duo

Trainer Doris Hebert and jockey Steve Bourque have won more than 420 races together, and they can add to that total Sunday when they make a rare appearance at Louisiana Downs with the promising 2-year-old Favorite Minit.

Favorite Minit invades from Evangeline Downs for the $50,000 Southern Beau, a 5 1/2-furlong race restricted to colts and geldings bred in Louisiana. He will meet seven others in the race, including an impressive maiden winner, Z Storm.

Maysville Slew to DeBartolo

Maysville Slew, who won a turf allowance two weeks ago at Remington Park in his first start since taking the $200,000 Dallas Turf Cup in June, will now be pointed for the $125,000 Edward J. DeBartolo Memorial Breeders' Cup at Remington on Sept. 6, said his owner and trainer, C.R. Trout.

The DeBartolo will be run over 1 1/8 miles on turf, the same distance as the Dallas Turf Cup.

Maysville Slew was considered for retirement after passing the $1 million mark in earnings in the Dallas Turf Cup, but Trout said the simple life did not agree with the gelding, who is 8.

Yearlings on block at Lone Star

Fasig-Tipton Texas will hold its summer yearling auction at Lone Star on Monday and Tuesday. There are 407 horses cataloged to the sale, about 100 more than last year. The increase is owed in part to the participation of more than 50 yearlings bred in neighboring Louisiana.

The auction sessions will start at 11 a.m. Central each day. Among the stallions with offspring in the sale are are Distorted Humor, Honour and Glory, Smoke Glacken, Alphabet Soup, Behrens, Valid Expectations, Open Forum, and Hadif.
