Turfway Park: Scottsbluff beats older rivals

Scottsbluff ($6), an up-and-coming 3-year-old, foiled his elders in Turf Paradise's $40,000 Caballos del Sol by gamely re-rallying to get the victory.

Scottsbluff dueled with Cocoa Latte through five-eighths of a mile, then dug in and beat Cocoa Latte on the line by a nose.

Ridden by Miguel Hernandez for trainer Dan Morgan, Scottsbluff covered the six furlongs in 1:09.06. Grimm, the even-money favorite, chased the top two all the way around but couldn't cut into their lead and finished third.

Campbell duo is Breeders Classic exacta

Owner-trainer William Campbell took home $337,500 of the $450,000 purse for the West Virginia Breeders Classic on Saturday at Charles Town, when his entry of Speed Whiz and Slew's Smile finished one-two.

A Huevo, the 1-2 favorite who won the Classic by 19 1/4 lengths last year, was pulled up early in the race and later euthanized.

The West Virginia Breeders Classics card comprised eight stakes, all for West Virginia-bred or -sired horses, worth a total of $1,080,000.

Unification wins the Grey Breeders' Cup Stakes at Woodbine on Monday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Unification ($8.60) held Badge of Truth at bay in the final furlong to capture Monday's $276,550 at Woodbine.

Bear's Kid set fractions of 23.66 and 47.95 seconds, while being stalked by Unification and favored Seaside Retreat in the 1 1/16-mile event for 2-year-olds.

Bear's Kid dropped back abruptly at the half-mile pole, and ended up pressing Seaside Retreat and Unification on the far turn.

Unification took control at the eighth pole and prevailed by three-quarters of a length, in a final time of 1:46.50.

Schooner Bay wins her first stakes in the Classy n' Smart Stakes at Woodbine on Monday.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Schooner Bay ($9.70) won her first stakes in Monday's supporting feature, the $125,000 , for Ontario-sired fillies and mares.

Schooner Bay, under Emile Ramsammy, raced on the lead throughout the 1 1/16-mile event and drew off in the final 70 yards to score by 2 3/4 lengths over favored Kissed by a Prince. Spanish Decree outran Coastal Fortress for third in the four-horse field.

Schooner Bay completed the distance in 1:46.03, earning $78,750 for Melnyk Racing Stables and trainer David Bell.

Sgt. Bert upsets Woodford County Stakes

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Sgt. Bert was unlucky in last month's Kentucky Cup Turf Dash at Kentucky Downs, getting steadied in midstretch when finishing a close fourth. Sunday in the $112,800 at Keeneland, his fortunes turned around.

Capitalizing a troubled trip from favored Battle Won, Sgt. Bert ($18.60) scored a neck victory over Atticus Kristy. Longshots Midwatch and Rockhurst finished third and fourth, respectively, resulting in a $2 Superfecta payoff of $31,413.80.

Intercontinental wires WinStar Galaxy Stakes

Intercontinental ($3.60) wins the Grade 2, WinStar Galaxy Stakes at Keeneland on Sunday.

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Continuing to prove she is one of the elite female turf milers in the country, Intercontinental won Sunday's $400,000, Grade 2 at Keeneland by three-quarters of a length over a hard-charging Wend.

Breaking alertly under Jerry Bailey, she went to the early lead, and unlike in past races, settled for her rider. Racing uncontested in the early part of the race, she carved out slow fractions of 24.77 seconds, 48.82 and 1:12.72, and had enough left in the stretch to repel stretch bids from third-place Katdogawn and runner-up Wend.

Direct Connect victorious in Cavonnier Stakes

ARCADIA, Calif. - Direct Connect pushed his stakes winning streak to two races with a come-from-behind victory Sunday's $79,650 at Santa Anita. The race served as a prep to the $125,000 California Cup Juvenile on Nov. 6.

Ridden by Garrett Gomez, Direct Connect ($8.80) rallied from more than 12 lengths off the pace to win the Cavonnier Stakes for state-breds 2-year-olds by a length. Direct Connect finished seven furlongs in 1:23.32.

Moonlite Romance, who led on the backstretch, finished second, followed by At a Boy Russ, Seven Nation Army and Her Red.

Bay Meadows: Sierra Sweetie captures Carmel Stakes

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Sierra Sweetie ($5.20) scored her second straight stakes victory, holding off Bai and Bai late as she captured the Carmel Stakes at Bay Meadows on Sunday.

The one-mile race for 2-year-old fillies was her first try around two turns. She sat behind brisk opening fractions by Come On Margaret, took over by the quarter pole and then drifted out a bit in the lane, losing some momentum as Bai and Bai, who was wide most of the way, moved to the rail to challenge.
