Trainer Eoin Harty says he will be satisfied as long as A.P. Warrior runs well in Sunday's El Camino Real.

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Trainer Eoin Harty has a million-dollar baby and hopes to be in Kentucky the first Saturday in May.

A.P. Warrior, the 3-year-old Harty will saddle in Sunday's 25th running of the El Camino Real Derby at Bay Meadows, is taking a path that has proven quite successful over the past 24 years. Runners from the El Camino Real Derby, a Grade 3, $250,000 race at 1 1/16 miles, have won seven Triple Crown events, and Harty hopes to rekindle some of the magic.

Stan Fulton, who won last year's El Camino with Uncle Denny, paid $1.3 million for A.P. Warrior.

Crowd drawn to a $3.6M day

ARCADIA, Calif. - The graded stakes schedule is on hold Saturday at Santa Anita and Gulfstream Park. Instead, a $3.6 million purse package has lured large fields to the fourth annual Sunshine Millions.

The restricted eight-race program - four races at Santa Anita and four at Gulfstream - pits California-breds against Florida-breds and showcases the marquee racetracks owned by Magna Entertainment Corp. Although the Florida-versus-California "rivalry" appears to be artificial, at least the Sunshine Millions purse money is genuine.

Repeat of last all Western Hemisphere needs

ARCADIA, Calif. - Western Hemisphere may be reaching her peak at an ideal time.

Earlier this month, she won the Kalookan Queen Handicap at Santa Anita by 2 1/2 lengths, stalking the pace to early stretch before pulling clear. Though a minor stakes, the Kalookan Queen may have been an ideal prep for Saturday's $300,000 Sunshine Millions Filly and Mare Sprint at Santa Anita.

Western Hemisphere will be trying to win her richest prize in the Filly and Mare Sprint, run over six furlongs.

Da Stoops will be heavily bet off his Cal Breeders' Champion win.

ARCADIA, Calif. - How fast can 3-year-old sprinters run? The threshold might be tested in Saturday's $250,000 Sunshine Millions Dash at Santa Anita.

The six-furlong race for California-breds and Florida-breds figures to be run at a furious pace, which has left trainers with front-runners worried about the toll of a quick pace and those with closers eager to see if the race develops in their favor.

Silver Tree extra tough as Bailey's final mount

Jim Lisa Photos
Silver Tree would be favored even if he were not retiring jockey Jerry Bailey's last ride.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - From a handicapping standpoint, Silver Tree looks like a perfect fit in Saturday's $500,000 Sunshine Millions Turf at Gulfstream Park. The Bill Mott-trained turf specialist is the class of the field, he is coming off a win at the distance in a Grade 3 stakes eight weeks earlier at Calder, and he is undefeated in three starts over the local course.

Dream of Summer still has right stuff at 7

Horsephotos
Dream of Summer, winning the Cal Cup Matron Handicap at Santa Anita in November, will run as the favorite in Saturday's Sunshine Millions Distaff at Gulfstream Park.

Dream of Summer already has reached $1 million in earnings and owns a Grade 1 victory. She is now 7, and most mares of her stature are headed to the breeding shed, if they are not there already. But owner James Weigel and trainer Juan Garcia are having so much fun with Dream of Summer that they intend to run her throughout the year, rather than send her to a stallion.

"She'll run all year if she keeps running good," Garcia said Thursday morning.
