Giacomo's race pleases Shirreffs

ARCADIA, Calif. - The third-place finish by the 2005 Kentucky Derby winner, Giacomo, in Saturday's Strub Stakes at Santa Anita may have disappointed many of the ontrack crowd of 20,263, but not trainer John Shirreffs.

Making his first start in nearly eight months, Giacomo rallied from 10th in the field of 11 to finish third, five lengths behind the impressive winner, High Limit. The Strub result was something of a preview of the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap on March 4, a race that will also feature the Strub runner-up, Top This and That.

Achilles of Troy barnmate also an ace

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - While all the focus regarding New York-based 3-year-olds has been on Achilles of Troy, owner Ernie Paragallo isn't totally convinced that the steel gray son of Notebook is the best 3-year-old in his barn.

Paragallo, who heads the family-owned Paraneck Stable, is equally as high on Scanlon's Song, who won his maiden most impressively on Jan. 28. Paragallo is considering running both 3-year-olds in Saturday's $65,000 Whirlaway Stakes at Aqueduct, the second two-turn race for 3-year-olds run this winter in New York.

Tampa bans Rice for 30 days

Don Rice, a six-time leading trainer at Tampa Bay Downs, has been suspended and ruled off the track for 30 days after two of his horses tested positive for excessive alkalizing agents, Tampa officials said Monday.

Rice, who has saddled six winners this year from 72 starts, is also facing an additional six-month suspension because a third sample from one of his horses has also tested positive, according to Margo Flynn, a spokeswoman for Tampa. Additional confirmation tests are being conducted on the third sample, Flynn said.
