Pimlico isolates horses due to suspected herpes

Two suspected cases of the equine herpes virus have caused officials at Pimlico Race Course to isolate five horses in the track's detention barn and to quarantine another 40-horse barn, track officials said Friday. The precautions are in place as Maryland officials await results of tests to determine if a horse euthanized on Monday had been sick from the virus.

Handle dips in Wilma's wake

MIAMI - The 2005-2006 Tropical at Calder session that ended Monday boasted some outstanding stakes performances, as well as races for trainer and jockey titles that went down to the final day of the meet. But the most lasting memory of the 55-day meet can be summed up in two words: Hurricane Wilma.

Golden Man flourishing as Dutrow's iron horse

EQUI-PHOTOS
Golden Man will be racing for the third time in nine days if he starts in Sunday's Brutally Frank Stakes.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - In an era when horses are routinely given weeks, if not months, between starts, Golden Man appears to be a throwback. At least trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. treats him as such.

Dutrow entered in Sunday's $60,000 Brutally Frank Stakes at Aqueduct, just three days after he finished second in an optional claiming race here on Thursday. That race came five days after Golden Man finished third in a $75,000 claiming race on New Year's Eve. Thus, he would be running three times in nine days.

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Trainer Cole Norman was out and about at Louisiana Downs on Friday morning for the first time since fracturing his neck in an all-terrain vehicle accident on Dec. 19. He could start as many as four sprinters in the $250,000 Duncan F. 'Captain' may pay dividends

SAN MATEO, Calif. - Fifty thousand dollars is a hefty investment in any horse, but trainer Cliff DeLima hopes it was money well spent when he claimed My Captain on Nov. 5.

The 7-year-old makes his second start for DeLima in the Sunday feature at Bay Meadows, a $62,500 optional claimer at six furlongs. My Captain drew the outside post in the field of five older runners.

DeLima knew what he was getting when he made the claim of the one-time stakes winner.

"He tries," DeLima said. "He's going good right now."

In Summation fits winning profile

Jim Lisa
In Summation was 2005's top 2-year-old at Calder, winning 5 of 6 starts. He's the favorite for Saturday's Aventura Stakes at one mile.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - The last two winners of Gulfstream Park's Aventura Stakes spent their 2-year-old campaigns based at nearby Calder Race Course. That trend will likely continue Saturday with In Summation.

The one-mile, $125,000 Aventura, which drew 14 3-year-olds, is now the traditional opening leg of Gulfstream's Florida Derby series, which culminates with the $1 million Florida Derby on April 1. It is also the highlight of Saturday's 10-race program, which includes the Grade 3 Hal's Hope and Mr. Prospector handicaps for older horses.
