Sam Houston increases overnight purses

Sam Houston is handling more than $2.2 million per day on its live races this year.

Sam Houston Race Park has seen a spike in handle during its current meet and plans to institute a substantial overnight purse increase this week, the Houston track announced Sunday.

Sam Houston will add $7,000 to the purse of each overnight race written for the main track. The move boosts maiden special weight purses to $43,000, entry-level allowances to $44,000, and $5,000 claiming races to $19,500. The track will add $2,000 to the purse of each overnight race written for turf.

Keeneland spring meet will allow limited number of ontrack spectators

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Keeneland Racecourse in Lexington will allow a “limited number” of general-admission tickets to be sold for its upcoming spring meet, the track announced on Wednesday.

The ticket packages will allow spectators without racing connections to attend the races at the immensely popular track for the first time since the fall meet of 2019. Last year, Keeneland canceled its spring meet outright due to the emerging COVID-19 threat. For an abbreviated summer meet and for its fall meet, it only allowed horse owners, sponsors, box holders, and racing-club members to attend.

Keepmeinmind uncertain for rescheduled Southwest Stakes

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Keepmeinmind’s status for the postponed Southwest Stakes next week at Oaklawn Park will be determined by the status of training here.

Horses were last able to train over the Oaklawn surface on Feb. 11. A winter storm has since moved into the region, forcing the cancellation of five days of training through Tuesday and eight days of racing through Feb. 21.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. -- Oaklawn Park has canceled racing from Thursday through Sunday due to the winter storm system that has engulfed Arkansas, according to a text notice issued by the track late Monday. 

It’s the second round of weather-related cancellations for Oaklawn, which last raced Feb. 11. The track had called off Presidents Day weekend ahead of the forecasted storm.

Keepmeinmind will wear silks of new co-owner, Spendthrift Farm, in Southwest

Spendthrift announced an ownership interest in Keepmeinmind on Feb. 7.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Jockey David Cohen will be wearing a new set of silks aboard Keepmeinmind in the upcoming Southwest Stakes at Oaklawn.

Spendthrift Farm announced Feb. 7 it had purchased a 50 percent ownership interest in Keepmeinmind. Cody Autrey, who brokered the deal through his bloodstock agency based in Hot Springs, Ark., recently said Keepmeinmind will race in Spendthrift’s silks in the Southwest.

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. – Jockey David Cohen has taken an active part in the development of Keepmeinmind since the leading Kentucky Derby prospect was 2 and he sees real progression in the colt as he approaches his 3-year-old debut Sunday in the Grade 3, $750,000 Southwest at Oaklawn Park.

The Kentucky Derby points race has had its date moved a second time after a winter storm system forced its cancellation Monday. It was rescheduled for Saturday, but over the weekend a worsening forecast led officials to push the race to Sunday.

NYRA offers shipping money and bonuses to some out-of-state runners

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The New York Racing Association will offer horsemen based at the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland and Oaklawn Park in Arkansas a financial incentive to ship horses to run at the Aqueduct and Belmont Park spring meets.

Kimmel has sharp pair of Secret Love, Frost Me in Maddie May

OZONE PARK, N.Y. – The John Kimmel-trained duo of Secret Love and Frost Me head a field of nine New York-bred 3-year-old fillies entered Monday for Saturday’s $100,000 Maddie May Stakes at Aqueduct.

Secret Love is coming off a 1 1/2-length victory in the Franklin Square Stakes going 6 1/2 furlongs on Jan. 16. She will be stretching out to a mile for the first time in the Maddie May.
