Trainer Paddy Gallagher wants McCann's Mojave close to the front in Saturday's Classic.

ARCADIA, Calif. - The tactical experiments are over for McCann's Mojave, who starts in Saturday's $1 million at Santa Anita.

After winning the $250,000 California Cup Classic at Santa Anita in November by leading throughout, McCann's Mojave was taken off the pace in the Grade 3 Native Diver Handicap at Hollywood Park on Dec. 10.

The plan failed. McCann's Mojave never threatened the leaders in the Native Diver and finished 7 1/2 lengths behind Trotamondo.

Silver Wagon leaves no doubt: He likes turf

Shakespeare, one of the top grass horses in the country, is scheduled to make his 2006 debut in the Dubai Duty Free Stakes on March 25.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - The Gulfstream Park turf course was open for training for the first time this winter on Wednesday morning. Surprisingly, only two horses took advantage of the opportunity, one of whom was Grade 1 winner Silver Wagon.

Silver Wagon had neither raced nor trained on turf prior to Wednesday, which made his seven-furlong workout under jockey Cornelio Velasquez as much an experiment as anything else. And from all appearances he passed the test with flying colors.

Twist and Pop, with 4 wins in 6 inner-track starts, goes for No. 5 Friday.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - When Pioneer Empire's late run fell a head short in last month's Grade 3 Gravesend Handicap, it provided trainer Kim Laudati what she called "the thrill of my life and the biggest disappointment at the same time."

Dismissed at 45-1 in the Gravesend, Pioneer Empire finished just behind fellow longshot Banjo Picker, who won the race at 47-1.

"I thought we had a huge chance in the race because he's so honest and he always gives 100 percent," Laudati said. "You get beat six inches at the wire, I couldn't believe it."
