Sunshine Alpine makes his two-turn debut in Saturday's Gotham.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Several hours before Richard Migliore rode the 8-year-old Kazoo to victory in last Saturday's Grade 3 , he guided the 3-year-old Sunshine Alpine through his final major workout for this Saturday's Grade 3 Gotham Stakes.

Migliore was aboard Sunshine Alpine for a seven-furlong move that Aqueduct clockers timed in 1:26.83 over the inner track. Like several horses in this field, including possible favorite Keyed Entry, Sunshine Alpine will be making his first start around two turns in the Gotham, which this year will be run on the inner track at 1 1/16 miles.

'News' just needs clean trip

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - On paper, Remarkable News is the horse to beat in Wednesday's $35,000 allowance feature at Gulfstream Park. But even trainer Angel Penna Jr. knows his horse cannot afford to make any mistakes in a very competitive field of nine older horses set to go 1 1/16 miles on the turf.

had his two-race win streak snapped when he finished a troubled third on Feb. 16, his first start in more than three months. That race was decided under the same second-level allowance conditions as Wednesday's main event.

Jonesboro best if last not true

Randy Morse knows his trainer cliches, but when referring to Jonesboro's most recent race, he can't help reaching into the bag for an old standby.

"You'll hear trainers say this all the time, but I've never had a horse train that good and run that bad," Morse said of Jonesboro's distant eighth-place finish Feb. 11 in the Essex Handicap at Oaklawn.

Hollendorfer may get another whiff of roses

ALBANY, Calif. - Trainer Jerry Hollendorfer hasn't had the best of luck in the Kentucky Derby, but he appears Louisville-bound with Cause to Believe, impressive winner of Saturday's California Derby.

Hollendorfer has trained two Kentucky Oaks winners, Lite Light and Pike Place Dancer, but his Derby experiences have not been nearly as pleasant.

In 1998, he had the likely favorite in undefeated Event of the Year, but eight days before the Derby the colt suffered a knee fracture.

Penn ends Maryland ban

Beginning Wednesday, Penn National Race Course will accept entries from horses stabled at Laurel Park, Pimlico, and the Fair Hill Training Center in Maryland, ending a ban on Maryland shippers in effect since late January.

Horses from Maryland will be permitted into the Penn National barn area as of midnight Thursday. The track had imposed a ban on Maryland-based horses because of an outbreak, since contained, of equine herpesvirus.
