Hard to pass up a price on Pletcher filly

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Getting a price on anything leading trainer Todd Pletcher sends out at this meeting is rare, but it does happen under the proper circumstances. Saturday's $200,000 Rampart Handicap could be one of those occasions: Grade 1 winner Sweet Symphony is likely to attract the majority of the public's support, allowing Pletcher's lightly raced Oonagh Maccool to fly slightly under the radar in the Grade 2 fixture for older fillies and mares.

'Brownie' lines up against Baghdaria

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Pin Oak Stable and trainer Donnie Von Hemel have come to the Oaklawn Park meet armed with quality 3-year-old fillies the past few years, among them See How She Runs and Bedanken. Their latest stakes winner is Brownie Points, who will face Grade 3 winner Baghdaria on Saturday in the $75,000 Honeybee at Oaklawn Park.

The 1 1/16-mile race for 3-year-old fillies is the final local prep for the Grade 2, $250,000 Fantasy here April 14.

Happy Surprise steps up for stakes

Happy Surprise, who improved dramatically when given Lasix and stretched out in distance, has the speed and the pedigree to handle his first stakes assignment in Saturday's $85,000 Private Terms at Laurel Park.

A one-mile race, the Private Terms drew a field of 11 3-year-olds and is the first leg of the Magna 5. The Private Terms is unlikely to produce any Kentucky Derby or Preakness candidates, since only two runners in the field are Triple Crown nominees.

Silver Axe enters off graded placing

Jack Coady/Coady Photography
Silver Axe will face easier company in the Gulf Coast Classic than he has in his last two starts.

Silver Axe, a rallying third to Rockport Harbor in the Grade 3 Essex Handicap at Oaklawn Park in his last start, rates as the one to beat in Saturday night's $75,000 Gulf Coast Classic at Evangeline Downs. The winter meeting's closing-night feature drew a solid field of eight to run 1 1/16 miles.

Cookin's Cast, Expectant Diva meet again

Cookin's Cast and Expectant Diva, who finished one-two in a recent allowance at Sam Houston Race Park, will be rematched Saturday night in the $40,000 Houston Ladies. The seven-furlong race is restricted to fillies and mares bred in Texas.

Cookin's Cast and Expectant Diva met over six furlongs in a Feb. 25 allowance, with Cookin's Cast winning by 1 3/4 lengths in a strong time of 1:11.60. Cookin's Cast stalked the pace in that race and should like the additional distance Saturday; she rallied for third going one mile in the $75,000 Martanza at Sam Houston in November.

Tonight Rainbow looks tough

Oklahoma-based Tonight Rainbow is the expected favorite among a field of 10 older horses for the $25,000 Tondi Stakes at Fonner Park.

The 7-year-old Tonight Rainbow, who won this race in 2003, made his 2006 debut at Fonner on Feb. 26, and was an impressive 5 1/2-length winner going a half-mile in the Grasmick Stakes. Based with trainer Boyd Caster at Will Rogers Downs, Tonight Rainbow tuned up for the Tondi with a strong 47.80-second breeze at Will Rogers on March 17. Larren Delorme again rides from post 5.

'Nkosi' gets year started

CHICAGO - One spot fits the needs of two high-class Christine Janks-trained horses ready to make their first start of 2006, and choosing between Nkosi Reigns and High Expectations in Saturday's fourth race at the National Jockey Club looked difficult for handicappers. Turns out, it's simple.

"It's Nkosi Reigns," Janks said Wednesday afternoon. "The choice is real easy, because the other horse came up sick today. I'll take the one without the fever anytime."

Military Major nicely placed

OLDSMAR, Fla. - An interesting optional claiming route, featuring the Oklahoma Derby winner Military Major in his second start of 2006, and a pair of very competitive starter handicap races highlight Saturday's card at Tampa Bay Downs.

Knapp runner at home on grass

PHOENIX - Soft Seventeen may well have found his calling, racing on the grass, and if that is the case his 10 foes in Turf Paradise's $40,000 Tempe Handicap on Saturday could be in a bit of a jam. The race, which goes as the eighth on a nine-race card, is for 3-year-olds at about a mile on the turf.

Turf appears to be the key for Soft Seventeen, who is trained by Neil Knapp. He had already shown ability on dirt with a rallying maiden win in a sprint at Turf Paradise on Jan. 6, followed by a rallying third in the $75,000 Turf Paradise Derby Feb. 11.
