Prospect Park's season gets started

ARCADIA, Calif. - Prospect Park was nearly a star in France in 2004 and 2005. He was second in the 2004 French Derby, and won a few group stakes, but could not win at the highest level.

Last fall, was sent to trainer Richard Mandella to continue his career. Friday at Santa Anita, Prospect Park makes his U.S. debut in a $71,000 allowance race at 1 1/8 miles on turf.

Wilko stays overseas, for now

Wilko has been sent to trainer Jeremy Noseda's stable in England to prep for the Met Mile at Belmont Park.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Wilko, who finished third in the $6 million Dubai World Cup at Nad Al Sheba racecourse last Saturday, will spend the next few months in England with trainer Jeremy Noseda before returning to the United States later this year, majority owner Paul Reddam said Wednesday.

Wilko, 4, will be sent to Noseda's stable in Newmarket, England, on Sunday, and will be pointed for the $600,000 Metropolitan Mile Handicap at Belmont Park on May 29.

Maiden has eye on Arkansas Derby

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - A 1 1/16-mile maiden race at Oaklawn Park on Friday could serve as Film Fortune's stepping-stone to the Grade 2, $1 million Arkansas Derby here April 15.

"We'll see what he does Friday," said Jack Van Berg, who trains Film Fortune.

Van Berg and owners Elizabeth and Tom Baxter flew Film Fortune to Oaklawn from Southern California this month for the Grade 3, $300,000 Rebel Stakes on March 18, and he closed for fifth, 5 1/2 lengths behind winner Lawyer Ron.

Entries dip for earlier opening card

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - The 2006 Woodbine meeting, scheduled for 168 days, starts Saturday with a 10-race program beginning at the new post time of 1:10 p.m. Eastern.

A total of 89 horses, including three also-eligibles, were entered for the opening card, with all races at five or 5 1/2 furlongs.

On last year's opening 10-race program, which took place April 16, 108 horses were entered.

Tantoo's a go for opening-night card

CALGARY, Alberta - It would not be opening weekend without an appearance by Tantoo, a 10-year-old mare who loves Stampede Park in the springtime.

On Friday, the Canadian Thoroughbred racing season begins at Stampede with a program of nine four-furlong dashes. The card attracted 80 horses, including Tantoo in the night's $23,500 allowance feature.

The 47-day Stampede Park meeting, which runs through June 18, offers 14 stakes worth a total of $700,000. The headliner, as always, is the $125,000 Alberta Derby on June 17.

'Serenade' gets special treatment

ALBANY, Calif. - It was a struggle to get Star Serenade to the races, but it may have been worth all the trouble for trainer Jim Hilling.

won her debut on Feb. 25 and returns to action in Friday's Golden Gate Fields feature, a six-furlong, $80,000 optional claimer that drew five 3-year-old fillies.

Star Serenade was difficult to break, Hilling said.

Delaware lands Jones barn

Trainer Larry Jones got to know Delaware Park last year when he sent out Island Sand to win the track's biggest race, the Grade 2, $1 million Delaware Handicap. This year, he plans to bring his entire stable there. Jones is one of several new trainers who will compete at the upcoming Delaware meet, which opens on April 22 and runs through Nov. 19.

Jones traveled to Delaware last July with Island Sand, who is now retired and is in foal to A.P. Indy. He will have a 32-horse stable at Delaware Park.

Fairmount track report

Knowwhatimean, upset winner of the Lightning Jet Handicap for Illinois-breds at Hawthorne last November, scored a comfortable two-length win in his 2006 debut in Saturday's featured $16,112 allowance at Fairmount Park. Knowwhatimean earned a Beyer Speed Figure of 84.

Finishing second in that five-furlong allowance race was Bebasque, who last August won the $50,000 Circle C Classic Handicap at Fairmount. Bebasque will likely compete in longer races this meet since the bulk of his earnings last year came in routes.

Fonner Park track report

Tonight Rainbow's string of consecutive appearances in the Budweiser-Tondi Stakes was extended to four last weekend - and he scored his second win in the race. A 7-year-old gelding trained by Boyd Caster, Tonight Rainbow first won the race in 2003 and won it again on Saturday by five lengths under Larren Delorme.

Tonight Rainbow's win in 2003 propelled him to local sprinter of the year honors that season, a title he won again in 2004.

Lone Star Park track report

Fasig-Tipton Texas's annual 2-year-olds in training sale will be held Tuesday in the sales pavilion in the stable area at Lone Star Park. The under-tack show will be held on Sunday. Both the workout program and sale will begin at 10 a.m. Central.

There are 315 horses consigned to the sale. Among the sires represented are Valid Expectations, Deputy Commander, Free House, Grand Slam, Honour and Glory, Silver Charm, and Yankee Victor.

Consignors include Asmussen Horse Center, Pre-K Training Center, Red Earth Training Center, and Safari Bloodstock.
