Barclay Tagg has high hopes for Showing Up.

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Roy and Gretchen Jackson have already made their reservations for Louisville, Ky. They're just not sure how many will be in their party.

The Jacksons, who race under the Lael Stables banner, are the owners of Barbaro, who assured his status as one of the favorites for the May 6 Kentucky Derby by winning last Saturday's $1 million Florida Derby. The Jacksons also own Showing Up, who will try to earn a position in the Derby starting gate when he runs in Saturday's Grade 1, $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct.

Brother Derek looks imposing

ARCADIA, Calif. - Brother Derek, the current favorite for the Kentucky Derby, is impressing those closest to him, and those who are considering facing him, as he heads into the Grade 1, $750,000 Santa Anita Derby on Saturday. He came out of his final work on Sunday so well that on Monday he walked under tack, instead of having a day off. And he has scared away all but a handful of serious contenders. As of Monday, only six other 3-year-olds were scheduled to face Brother Derek in the Santa Anita Derby, California's final major prep for the May 6 Kentucky Derby.

Runaway Dancer looking for spark

Runaway Dancer, winning last year's Jim Murray Memorial Handicap, will make his second start of 2006 in Saturday's Arcadia Handicap at Santa Anita.

ARCADIA, Calif. - Before Brother Derek dominated attention in the Dan Hendricks stable, Runaway Dancer was the main attraction.

A gray gelding, Runaway Dancer won the 2003 Carleton Burke Handicap and the 2005 Jim Murray Memorial Handicap at Hollywood Park, turf marathons that suited his late kick.

The win in the Jim Murray came on the day Brother Derek won his maiden. In the winner's circle after Runaway Dancer won, Hendricks said he was equally excited about Brother Derek's win.

Chukkaluk in position to rally

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Elliecat is the one to beat and Chukkaluk is the one to fear on Wednesday in the featured ninth race at Oaklawn Park. A six-furlong starter allowance, the race is restricted to fillies and mares who have started for a claiming price and who have never won two races. A win by either Elliecat or Chukkaluk will make a March 9 starter a key race. The sixth-place finisher from that race, Two Dime Limit, came back to win here Sunday.

'Saint' on for Illinois Derby

Sweetnorthernsaint will race next Saturday in the Illinois Derby at Hawthorne rather than the Wood Memorial at Aqueduct, and will ship from his home base at Laurel Park to Chicago by van on Tuesday, trainer Mike Trombetta said Sunday.

Trombetta said he had picked out the Illinois Derby because it offered Sweetnorthernsaint a better chance to pick up graded stakes earnings he could need to get into the Kentucky Derby.

"The long and short of it is I'm down to crunch time in terms of graded money," Trombetta said.
