Joyfull Wind fast and in top form

CALGARY, Alberta - Joyfull Wind heads a field of five in Saturday's featured eighth race for 3-year-old fillies here at Stampede Park.

A California-bred, Joyfull Wind was visually impressive in drawing off for a three-length score a week ago in a $17,500 claimer over four furlongs, and owner-trainer Dale Saunders wheels her right back in this half-miler for $25,000 claimers.

Joyfull Wind is the only double winner in this lightly raced group and is expected to be favored once again. Leading rider Quincy Welch is in the irons.

Record holders do battle

Aladim Bryan SA, the 550-yard track record holder at Los Alamitos, and Quality Corona, the 100-yard track record holder, find common ground when they meet at 350 yards in the Grade 3, $25,000 Kaweah Bar Handicap on Saturday night at Los Alamitos.

A Brazilian-bred, Aladim Bryan SA broke a 24-year-old track record on Jan. 14, when he won the 550-yard Bellflower Handicap in 26.54 seconds over Gold Medal Jess, who went on to win the Grade 1 Los Alamitos Winter Championship. Aladim Bryan SA followed the Bellflower win with a close second in a 440-yard allowance race on Feb. 18.

Big crowd to greet elite meet

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Every spring, when Keeneland Race Course reopens on a Friday in April, there exists a pervasive sense of youth and rejuvenation - and not just because thousands of post-pubescents, allured by a biannual college scholarship raffle, help pack the track to the rafters.

Guidry no longer Romans's main man

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Jockey Mark Guidry enjoyed the most productive year of his career in 2005 when his mounts earned nearly $7.7 million. Guidry, now 46, won the Santa Anita Derby on Buzzards Bay, tied for a riding title at the Churchill Downs fall meet, and rode with such consistency and distinction that his fellow jockeys voted him the winner of the George Woolf Memorial Award early this year.

Dutrow high on New York Hero

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - New York Hero has not run since last August, and has lost 16 consecutive races, the last four by a combined 101 1/4 lengths. But to listen to trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. talk, there isn't any other horse you'd want to wager on in Friday's feature at Aqueduct.

"I can't wait to watch him run," Dutrow said. "If he gets a good trip, he's going to run big."

25-cent pick six at Pimlico

Pimlico Racecourse will offer a 25-cent pick-six wager with a $5,000 guaranteed payout beginning with the opening of its meet on April 20, an official of the company that owns the track said Wednesday.

Lou Raffetto, the chief operating officer of the Maryland Jockey Club, which owns Pimlico and Laurel Park, said that Pimlico decided to offer the bet after officials talked with customers in an effort to devise an alternative to 10-cent superfecta bets, which have become popular at many tracks.

'Lovelysong' will be hard to catch

CALGARY, Alberta - Another Lovelysong heads a field of six fillies and mares in the featured eighth race here at Stampede Park on Friday evening, a four-furlong dash for $17,500 claimers.

Another Lovelysong, a 5-year-old Washington-bred, has trained strongly for trainer Ron Grieves, including a bullet four-furlong drill in 46.80 seconds on

March 14. She appears to possess the best early foot in the field and will be very tough to catch if she breaks alertly from post 2 under Quincy Welch.

Terroplane could use a little luck

Horsephotos
Santa Anita Derby contender Point Determined, with trainer Bob Baffert watching from the track apron, goes out for some light exercise Wednesday morning.

ARCADIA, Calif. - With a little more racing luck, Terroplane might have won a stakes this year.

Twice at this meeting in one-mile stakes on turf, Terroplane has launched a rally in early stretch that has fallen short. He finished second by a head in the Thunder Road Handicap on Feb. 8 and was fifth, beaten a length, in the Grade 1 Frank Kilroe Mile on March 4.

Saturday, Terroplane is back in the $150,000 Arcadia Handicap at a mile on turf. While he faces a stout group, Terroplane is once again well-prepared to contend for a win, trainer Neil Drysdale said.
