Fire Path owns top late kick in closer's race

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - There are three speed types and three closers among the six horses entered for Sunday's $37,000 optional claiming and allowance feature at Gulfstream Park. It is a scenario that figures to put one of the late runners in the winner's circle if the one-mile race unfolds as expected.

Notgonagetemtoday, Ricardo A, and Russian Bay should ensure an honest pace if they all start. A prospective speed battle is likely to set things up for Fire Path, My Snookie's Boy, or Itsawonderfulife.

Gumboots tunes up for future stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Gumboots will begin her quest toward the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks in June in Sunday's feature here, a $79,900 allowance prep for the Star Shoot Stakes on April 23.

Root sends tough pair in allowance

PORTLAND, Ore. - Trainer Ben Root sends out a formidable entry in Sunday's Portland Meadows feature, a six-furlong allowance test that has drawn a field of seven fillies and mares.

Root will saddle the 4-year-old One Fast Cowgirl and the 3-year-old Delecana, both of whom are owned by the trainer's mother, Cookie Root. One Fast Cowgirl, a double winner at Emerald Downs last summer, may be the stronger half of the entry. One Fast Cowgirl is coming off a sharp second against allowance rivals on March 27, and she will again be ridden by Juan Gutierrez at 123 pounds.

Mixed views on supplementary fees

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Woodbine's stakes schedule kicks in next weekend, with the $125,000 Jacques Cartier set for Saturday and the $125,000 Whimsical for Sunday.
