Josie Carroll saddles two contenders

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Josie Carroll will be holding a strong hand Wednesday night at Woodbine when she sends out two uncoupled runners, High Volt Jolt and Bureaucratic, in the featured opener on the seven-race card.

High Volt Jolt will compete with a $62,500 tag in the 1 1/16-mile optional claimer with second-level allowance conditions. He was claimed for $40,000 here in November by owners Jim and Alice Sapara, who sent him to Santa Anita for the winter with Carroll.

Two riders dominate weekend

CALGARY, Alberta - The weekend at Stampede Park belonged to riders Quincy Welch and Desmond Bryan, who accumulated six wins apiece, including all eight races on Saturday's card.

Welch capped Saturday's card with a win aboard My Guy in the Hoofprint on My Heart. It was the fourth win of the afternoon for Welch, matching Bryan's total on the day.

The Hoofprint on My Heart, the final major stakes prep for the $125,000 Alberta Derby here June 17, was contested over a sloppy surface that favored speed throughout the weekend.

Monmouth: No Sleep draws away

No Sleep brushed off heavy favorite Sis City on the final turn and went on to score a 7 1/2-length victory in the $65,000 Fort Monmouth Stakes at Monmouth Park.

Ridden by Charles Lopez, No Sleep stalked in second position behind Toll Taker, who set fractions of 24.02 and 48.15 seconds. No Sleep grabbed the lead shortly after the final turn, where she put away a minor challenge from Sis City and then widened her lead with ease. Sis City finished second, and it was another 2 1/4 lengths to Toll Taker in third.

Prairie Meadows: Wild L gets up

Wild L ($5.40) rallied through the stretch and collared pacesetter Timetobook nearing the wire to score a three-quarter-length victory in the $63,500 Gray's Lake Stakes for 3-year-old Iowa-breds at Prairie Meadows.

Wild L ran the six furlongs in 1:10.41 under jockey Glenn Corbett. Hesluckytoo dueled to the stretch and regained second at the wire, finishing a nose in front of Timetobook.

The victory was Wild L's first career stakes win and his third win overall in four starts.

Hollywood: Layoff not a problem

My Miss Storm Cat returned from a two-month layoff to score by 1 1/4 lengths in the $68,690 Desert Stormer Handicap at Hollywood Park.

The race was a prep to the $500,000 Princess Rooney Handicap at Calder on July 15.

Ridden by Victor Espinoza, My Miss Storm Cat ($3.40) stalked pacesetter Maryfield through early fractions of 21.87 and 44.26 seconds, circled the leader on the turn, and pulled away, finishing six furlongs in 1:09.44.

Maryfield held second, finishing two lengths in front of Allswellthatnswell in the field of six fillies and mares.

London Snow coming right back for Oaks

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - London Snow has done everything right thus far this season, winning for the second time in as many appearances in last Saturday's $126,200 Lady Angela here at Woodbine.

But John Charalambous, who trains London Snow, is hoping the best is yet to come as the filly is scheduled to swing back in the $500,000 Woodbine Oaks on June 11.

"I think she ran great," said Charalambous, who had watched London Snow stalk the pace and come on to score by 2 1/2 lengths under regular rider Steven Bahen in the Lady Angela.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - New York invader Remarkable News ($3.50) came out on top in a four-horse win photo in an exiting renewal of the Grade 3 at Woodbine Sunday.

With Javier Castellano aboard, Remarkable News went right to the front in the mile and a sixteenth turf event, and was pressed along the inside by Le Cinquieme Essai. They dueled around the far turn after tepid early fractions, and then quickened through the stretch.

Giving jockey Shaun Bridgmohan his first stakes win at Hollywood, Richwoman ($5.40) rallied from third to win by 2 1-4 lengths over 26-1 Sharoana. Lost on Champagne finished third in the field of nine 2-year-old fillies.

Comebacker El Don wins San Matean Handicap

SAN MATEO, Calif. - El Don ($9.60), making his first start since a disappointing 10th-place finish when favored in the Cal Cup Mile last November, held on gamely in the stretch to outlast fast-finishing Sharp Writer in the $71,350 San Matean Handicap at Bay Meadows on Saturday.

El Don won the $100,000 California Turf Championship over the Longden Turf Course last Labor Day prompting owner-breeder John Harris to say, "We thought we had a Cal Cup horse."

But El Don tailed off and was turned out after the Cal Cup race.
