LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Caribbean Caper looks like the horse to beat in the $104,000 allowance feature on the last twilight program of the spring meet Thursday, but recalculations may be in order. Trainer Al Stall Jr. said Caribbean Caper “most likely” will be scratched as the only 3-year-old in the race-7 lineup in order to stick with fellow 3-year-olds at a later date. With that known, Reagan’s Edge and Skinny Dip become the fillies to beat in a second-level allowance to be run at six furlongs.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Tyler Gaffalione, well on his way to another riding title at Churchill, will serve a three-day suspension after the spring meet ends Saturday, although it’s something that will scarcely impact his intended schedule.

Gaffalione is suspended for the first three days of the Ellis Park meet (June 27, July 1, July 2), with the penalty effectively preventing him from riding those same dates at Belmont Park. When Churchill ends, Gaffalione moves to New York, primarily for the Saratoga meet that starts July 15, and until Kentucky Downs starts Sept. 5.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Brook Smith had been hiding in plain sight, but no more. As the man behind an ownership entity known as RSLP Racing LLC, Smith dropped the collective jaw of the racing world Saturday when RSLP claimed three horses for $100,000 apiece out of the fourth race at Churchill Downs.

The move was so extraordinary that experienced horsemen and social-media wags said they had never seen anything like it. From a field of 10 2-year-olds going five furlongs, RSLP claimed the winner, Just Call Ray, along with Versatile (sixth) and Braggadoccio (10th).

ARCADIA, Calif. – This Tea, second in two Grade 2 stakes for fillies and mares in recent months at Santa Anita, has been retired after being diagnosed with an ankle injury, trainer George Papaprodromou said Sunday.

This Tea, a 4-year-old filly by Curlin, had one win in 13 starts and earned $165,320. She finished second by 9 1/4 lengths to As Time Goes By in the Grade 2 Santa Margarita Stakes on April 24, and second by a nose at 23-1 to that rival in the Grade 2 Santa Maria Stakes on May 22.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Rock Your World, winner of the Grade 1 Santa Anita Derby in April but well beaten in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes, will race on turf this summer.

Trainer John Sadler said Sunday that Rock Your World will be pointed to the Grade 2 Del Mar Derby at 1 1/8 miles on turf on Sept. 4. Rock Your World might prep at Del Mar in the Grade 3 La Jolla Stakes at 1 1/16 miles on turf on Aug. 8, Sadler said.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Less than three weeks after a win in the Grade 1 Shoemaker Mile at Santa Anita, Smooth Like Strait worked a half-mile in 49.60 seconds on Friday for an expected start in the Grade 2 Eddie Read Stakes on July 24 at Del Mar. The $250,000 Eddie Read Stakes is run at 1 1/8 miles on turf.

“I’m very pleased with what I saw,” trainer Michael McCarthy said of the workout.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Gufo, the Grade 1 Belmont Derby winner who was third to Domestic Spending in the Grade 1 Manhattan earlier this month, will be equipped with blinkers for his next start, trainer Christophe Clement said Sunday.

Gufo is likely to run next in the $150,000 Grand Couturier on July 5 at Belmont, though the Grade 1, $500,000 United Nations on July 17 at Monmouth Park also is under consideration, Clement said. The Grade 1, $750,000 Sword Dancer on Aug. 28 at Saratoga is Gufo’s primary summer objective.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Somebody must’ve forgotten to tell trainer Fausto Gutierrez that top-level horses in America usually don’t wheel back in three weeks, at least not when the weather gets this warm.

Not that anyone should mind.

Six months ago, the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting began the day after Christmas without a paying audience amidst a pandemic that had a devastating grip on Southern California, filling hospitals beyond capacity. Essential employees and a small number of horse owners were among the few people to attend what should have been a huge opening day on Dec. 26, and they were allowed in only after they underwent a pre-admission temperature check.

A portion of the purse of the Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship last September was ordered redistributed by Santa Anita stewards on Saturday after runner-up Flagstaff showed the presence of the banned medication clodronic acid, a bisphosphonate.

Flagstaff earned $40,000, which has been ordered forfeited by owners Hronis Racing and Lane’s End Racing, trainer John Sadler and Victor Espinoza. Flagstaff is demoted to unplaced, according to the ruling.
