Free's Del Mar plays for Friday, August 4

Good news.

Sip One for Mom ($17.20) returned to her preferred grass surface and rallied to a decisive and somewhat predictable victory Thursday in race 7.

Now for the bad news. Morning-line favorite Burst of Light scratched, along with contenders Lady Truffles and Light and Magic.

Because of the defections, Sip One for Mom started at "only" 7-1. She failed to meet the minimum odds requirement of 9-1, and goes into the ledger as "no play." Considering the scratches, 7-1 was a square price.

Litfin's Saratoga plays for Friday, August 4

FRIDAY, AUGUST 4

The recap of Thursday's plays:

Summer Palace set the pace and came up dead short in the fourth race.

In the fifth, Summer Service settled for second behind the front-running Thatsmorelikeit, who lowered the course record to 1:01.17 for five and a half furlongs on the Mellon turf. That's four straight starts now that Summer Service has run in a race where a course record was set!

We pick up the pieces and move on to Friday.

Will Flower Alley need one?

Horsephotos
Flower Alley, with Angel Cordero at Saratoga on Wednesday, comes into Saturday's Grade 1 Whitney with just one prep, a win in the Salvator Mile on June 24.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Todd Pletcher believes Flower Alley will be better later in the year. Kiaran McLaughlin believes Invasor has never been better. In whom you trust will determine how you wager in Saturday's Grade 1, $750,000 at Saratoga.

Hello Liberty among 14 in Test

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - In an era when short fields have become all too commonplace in stakes races across the country, Saturday's $250,000 Test at Saratoga will provide a refreshing change of pace with 14 3-year-old fillies expected to start in the seven-furlong, Grade 1 race.

The Test drew 15, including the Patrick Biancone-trained entry of 2005 Breeders' Cup Juvenile Fillies runner-up . Biancone said Sabatini will run if the track is fast; Wild Fit goes if the track is off.

Jazil's return delayed till end of August

Horsephotos
Circular Quay and Angel Cordero test the track Thursday morning. The undefeated Todd Pletcher-trained colt is aiming for the Hopeful.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - Belmont Stakes winner Jazil won't be rejoining trainer Kiaran McLaughlin's barn as early as anticipated, and it is unclear whether he will be ready to make the Breeders' Cup Classic in November.

Last month, McLaughlin revealed that Jazil was suffering from bruising in a hind cannon bone and was going to spend a month on owner Sheikh Hamdan's Shadwell Farm in Kentucky. McLaughlin was hopeful to get the horse back on Aug. 10.

Untouched Talent in off stakes win

DEL MAR, Calif. - The experience that Untouched Talent gained by winning the Juan Gonzalez Stakes in her debut last month will play a vital role in Saturday's $150,000 Sorrento Stakes at Del Mar.

She broke from the rail in that five-furlong race at Pleasanton, led throughout, and won easily. It was a performance expected from a filly bought for $500,000 at the Barretts March sale of 2-year-olds in training.

For her second start, will need to draw on that experience when she breaks from the rail in the Grade 3 Sorrento Stakes for 2-year-old fillies at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Shipper brings big fig to Gardenia

HENDERSON, Ky. - The Gardenia Handicap, the signature race at Ellis Park, historically has been locally concentrated, with the occasional outsider crashing the party. A California mare, Dream of Summer, dominated the Grade 3 Gardenia Handicap last year as the favorite, and on Saturday it will be a Florida invader, Prospective Saint, who will be the highweight and probable favorite in the Gardenia.
