CHICAGO - Arlington Park is considering the replacement of its dirt track with a synthetic racing surface before the beginning of its 2007 racing season on May 4, according to sources with direct knowledge of the situation, but the change would first have to be approved by Arlington's parent company, Churchill Downs Incorporated.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Hastings closed its 2006 live meet earlier than planned as the final nine races on Sunday were canceled due to unsafe track conditions caused by heavy snowfall.
For the 78-day meeting, average daily all-sources handle on Hastings's races was up almost 3 percent, to $870,729 from $848,031 for last year's 82-day meet. Total handle for the shorter meet this year was down by 2 percent from last year, and per-race handle was up by 7 percent.
SAN MATEO, Calif. - Russell Baze won Sundays first two races at Bay Meadows to bring his career victory total to 9,528 and pull within two of Laffit Pincay Jr.s mark of 9,530.
Baze went wire to wire in the first race, winning aboard Playingr Song ($5). He came from last to win the second aboard Candis Double ($7.40). Jerry Hollendorfer trained both runners. Neither was favored.
Trainer Scott Blasi completed a sweep of the weekend's Thoroughbred stakes at Zia Park on Saturday, when he sent out Plaid to win the $83,800 Chaves County. His other weekend stakes win at the track came on Friday, with Western Prize in the $82,700 Eddy County.
Jack Grant was prominent throughout for a nose win over Tytus in Saturday night's $45,000 Bountiful Harvest at Sam Houston Race Park. It was another four and a quarter lengths back in third to Sir Five Star.
Jack Grant ($29) pushed Eldon's Effort through an opening quarter in 21.65 seconds, then put a head in front through a half-mile in 44.19. The winner went on to cover the six furlongs for 2-year-olds in 1:10.68.

First Down Toro won the richest race ever run at Evangeline Downs on Saturday night, when he held for a nose win over favorite Heza Fast Classic in the $517,969 Louisiana Quarter Horse Breeders' Association Futurity. It was another head back in third to Bottle of Shine.
First Down Toro ($17.80) broke on top in the 400-yard race for 2-year-olds, and won in a time of 20.11 seconds. Eddie Cox was aboard the winner for trainer Matt Baker. First Down Toro earned $221,387 for the victory, which was his third from five career starts. He races for his breeders, Gene and Kathyrn Smith.
ARCADIA, Calif. - Hollywood Park has guaranteed the pick six pool on Sunday will reach $1 million. The promotion has a major boost with a carryover of $155,297 from Saturday's program.
Sunday's program is the best of the fall meeting, featuring two $500,000 races - the Matriarch Stakes and the Hollywood Derby - and full fields throughout the pick six.

INGLEWOOD, Calif - Valbenny, unraced since winning a maiden race in Scotland in July, pulled an upset in Saturdays $100,000 at Hollywood Park.
Valbenny ran a mile on turf in 1:36.58, rallying wide through the stretch to catch 5-2 favorite Mystic Soul in the final 20 yards to win by three-quarters of a length. Spenditallbaby finished third, a neck behind Mystic Soul, in the field of 12 2-year-old fillies.
OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Barclay Tagg pegged Nobiz Like Shobiz as a Triple Crown horse five minutes after he first saw him. In just over 108 seconds on Saturday, Nobiz Like Shobiz proved that Tagg knows what he's talking about.
Making a scintillating move from the quarter pole to the eighth pole, Nobiz Like Shobiz roared to a 6 1/2-length victory in Saturday's Grade 2, $200,000 at Aqueduct. Zanjero rallied from last to be second, 1 3/4 lengths ahead of Kong the King.
