Notable Okie, who finished second by a nose at 17-1 last out in the $100,000 Remington Green Stakes, will return to the overnight ranks Friday night in the featured ninth race at Remington Park. An optional claimer, the one-mile turf race drew a field of 10.

The $40,000 Miss Indiana Stakes, which goes as the 12th and final race on Friday's program at Hoosier Park, features a rematch between Amature's Prize and Tawny Two Swan, the one-two finishers in last month's City of Anderson Stakes.

With honors for statebred 2-year-old filly on the line, the Miss Indiana figures to be a more intriguing race from a sporting perspective than for wagering. Though a total of eight fillies were entered in the Miss Indiana, there is one two-horse entry and one three-horse entry, which leaves bettors with just five wagering interests.

Jockey Guy Smith was a constant presence in the winner's circle at Delta Downs during the 2004-2005 meet, when he won the title at the track by 37 wins. This year, however, he is working the meet in a whole new capacity. Smith is working as an agent, putting his riding career on hold as he heals from injuries sustained in a spill in April.

Smith, 37, shattered his C-7 vertebrae and broke his left shoulder during a race at Evangeline Downs when his mount broke down while contesting the pace, fell, and threw Smith.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Sweet Breanna has had a frustrating time trying to find the winner's circle, but she may have found a field she can handle in Friday's Woodbine headliner.

Sweet Breanna's lone victory this year came in a first-level allowance at 1 1/16 miles in May, when she defeated Kimchi by 5 1/4 lengths. Kimchi turned the tables on her in the June 11 Woodbine Oaks, however, winning by 1 3/4 lengths in an upset.

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - A couple of narrow defeats by Old Forester this summer might be a blessing in disguise, at least as it pertains to the feature race Friday at Churchill Downs.

Old Forester was beaten a head in the Battlefield Stakes at Monmouth Park in June, then a neck in a high-end allowance race at Saratoga in his next start in August. If he had gotten up to win either race, he would not have been eligible for the classified conditions that govern the eighth of 10 Friday races, a $61,000 allowance scheduled for 1 1/16 miles on the turf.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - With the Woodbine meeting heading into its final month, several outfits are beginning the process of winding down their local operations.

One trainer in that position is Malcolm Pierce, who usually winters at Fair Grounds in Louisiana but stayed home last year rather than try another locale when the meet there was washed out.

Vic Stauffer, the race-caller at Gulfstream Park since 2000, has been notified by track management that his services have not been retained for the 2007 meet.

Stauffer, 47, currently is working at Hollywood Park, where he has called races since 2002. He also has called races within the last year at the Sonoma County Fair in northern California and has served as a part-time analyst for Television Games Network. He has been calling races since 1985.

The final television rating for the nearly six-hour broadcast of the Breeders' Cup on ESPN on Saturday was a 0.8, the lowest rating ever for the event and a 47opercent decline from last year's 1.5 rating.

The broadcast, which aired from noon to 5:45 p.m., was watched by approximately 9.6omillion people, according to Mark Mandel, a spokesman for ESPN. The estimate for the number of people came from ESPN's research department, Mandel said.

The slots-rich Zia Park will pay out more than $2 million in purses to New Mexico-breds on Sunday, when seven Thoroughbred stakes and four Quarter Horse stakes are run at the Hobbs, N.M., track. Entries for the second annual New Mexico Cup Day were taken on Tuesday.

"Things went real well, a lot of full fields," said Tom Davis, racing secretary at Zia Park.
