Curlin romps in Rebel

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - Curlin showed maturity beyond his experience Saturday at Oaklawn Park, when he took command of the Grade 3, $300,000 Rebel Stakes in his second career start and went on to a 5 1/4-length win over Officer Rocket. It was another 2 1/2 lengths back in third to Teuflesberg, while favorite Flying First Class finished eighth. The Rebel was a prep for the Grade 2, $1 million Arkansas Derby here April 14, which is the next goal for Curlin, said his trainer, Steve Asmussen.

Cobalt Blue comfortable San Felipe winner

ARCADIA, Calif. - To a list that already included Great Hunter, Liquidity, and Notional, you can now add Cobalt Blue to trainer Doug O'Neill’s lovely bunch of 3-year-olds.

Cobalt Blue, owned by entertainment impresario Merv Griffin, successfully stretched out around two turns and put himself in the picture for the May 5 Kentucky Derby with a front-running victory in the Grade 2, $250,000 San Felipe Stakes on Saturday at Santa Anita.

Fass Feat wire to wire at Delta

Fass Feat remained undefeated in four career starts on Friday night, when he led throughout for a three-quarter-length win in the $75,000 Bayou State at Delta Downs. Apprentice Joe Talamo was aboard for the win, and with the victory completed a sweep of the two stakes on the card. Talamo also guided Queezee Deezee to a head win in the $75,000 Azalea.

Jade's Revenge rallies in Poly debut

Jade's Revenge made his Polytrack debut a winning one when getting a well-gauged ride from Rodney Prescott to capture the $50,000 Tejano Run Stakes at Turfway Park in Florence, Ky.

Jade's Revenge, a 4-year-old Quiet American colt who had been training over an all-weather surface at his home base at the Fair Hill training center in Maryland, turned back the 6-5 favorite, Sidcup, to capture the 1o1/8-mile Tejano Run by 1 3/4 lengths. Dynareign finished another two lengths back in third in a field of 11 older horses.

Sweetnorthernsaint scores easily

Displaying his superior class, Sweetnorthernsaint bounded to the front under Mario Pino and led every step to win the $63,000 Harrison E. Johnson for 3-year-olds and up by four lengths under a hand ride.

Capac came up the inside and outdueled Future Fantasy by three-quarters of a length for second in a field reduced from seven to five by the scratches of My Dream and Trapped Again.

River's Prayer holds on in O'Brien

River's Prayer, overcoming severe early pace pressure, was able to hang on and score a front-running victory in the $133,750 Irish O'Brien Stakes, a 6 1/2-furlong turf sprint for California-bred fillies and mares at Santa Anita.

River's Prayer defeated Bachelorette One by 1 1/4 lengths, with Gn. Group Meeting a nose farther back in third. La Tormenta, who tried to go with River's Prayer early, buckled from the swift pace and faded to finish last in the field of six.

Rolling Sea wins No. 3

Rolling Sea was purchased privately last summer at Arlington, a decent prospect for Illinois-bred stakes races. Rolling Sea did win an Illinois-bred stakes in her first start for trainer Steve Asmussen and owner Ro Parra, but who knew she would blast through the Fair Grounds meet this winter, easily beating open company race after race?

Sweet Fervor comes flying in Jones

Sweet Fervor launched a torrid rally down the middle of the racetrack to catch favored Any Limit in the final yards and post an 8-1 upset Saturday in the $200,000 Shirley Jones Breeders' Cup Handicap at Gulfstream Park in Hallandale Beach, Fla.

Giving trainer Bill Mott his second straight victory in the Grade 2 race, Sweet Fervor returned $18.60 after finishing seven furlongs in 1:22.67 over a fast track. Fernando Jara was aboard Sweet Fervor, a 4-year-old Seeking the Gold filly bred and owned by the Kinsman Stable of George Steinbrenner.
