C Z Rocket possible for Bing Crosby

C Z Rocket will be considered for the Grade 1 Bing Crosby on July 31 at Del Mar.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – C Z Rocket was the favorite in Lone Star Park’s Sexton Mile and in the aftermath of the race the horse was found to have lost one of his front shoes, trainer Peter Miller said Tuesday.

C Z Rocket flew home to his San Luis Rey Downs training center base in Southern California on Wednesday, and he could see action next at Del Mar. Miller said a possible next race for the horse is the Grade 1, $300,000 Bing Crosby on July 31. The six-furlong race is a qualifier for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint.

Mo Mosa headed to Del Mar with trainer Maker

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas – Mo Mosa will likely summer at Del Mar after running the best race of his career last Monday in the Grade 3, $400,000 Steve Sexton Mile at rain-soaked Lone Star Park.

“He liked the Texas mud,” said Mike Maker, who trains Mo Mosa. “We brought him back to Kentucky, and it looks like we might take him to California for the summer, for the Del Mar meet.”

ELMONT, N.Y. – Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. was taken to a Long Island hospital after he was unseated by his mount, Equal Pay, in Thursday’s fifth race at Belmont Park.

Equal Pay, a first-time starter by Quality Road trained by Chad Brown, had just taken command of the 6 1/2-furlong maiden race when she propped at the three-sixteenths pole and catapulted Ortiz out of the saddle. After landing hard on the dirt course, it appeared Ortiz was clipped in the upper body by Brook’s Edge, ridden by Junior Alvarado.

Trevor Denman returning to call races at Del Mar meet

Trevor Denman has been calling races for more than 40 years.

Trevor Denman is returning to the microphone at Del Mar this summer after a one-year hiatus.

Denman was absent in 2020 because of the pandemic, remaining at his year-round home in Minnesota. The track announced his return in a statement released on Thursday.

Denman, 68, will describe the action during the summer meeting, which runs from July 16 to Sept. 6, and again at the autumn meeting in November.

Richard Vega, a longtime trainer on the Pennsylvania racing circuit, has been summarily suspended by the state’s racing commission after a search of his barn at Parx Racing outside Philadelphia yielded “multiple loaded needles and syringes,” according to a ruling from the Pennsylvania Horse Racing Commission.

Vega’s request for a stay of the summary suspension was denied three days after the initial ruling, according to a separate notice, which said that the Parx board of stewards “affirmed” the suspension “after considering all testimony and evidence presented” on May 27.

The Kentucky Derby to Belmont path has become the rule rather than the exception

Commendable won just two races in his career, a debut victory against maidens at Del Mar in the summer of 1999, and nearly 10 months later, after six straight races in which he finished out of the money, the Belmont Stakes. He was the fourth Belmont winner for trainer D. Wayne Lukas, the third for jockey Pat Day, both already members of the National Museum of Racing and Hall of Fame by then.

ELMONT, N.Y. – Rombauer will go down as trainer Michael McCarthy’s first winner of a Triple Crown race. As a longtime assistant to trainer Todd Pletcher, however, this trail for McCarthy has not been one less traveled.

McCarthy worked for Pletcher from 2002 to early 2014, when Pletcher was a constant presence in the Kentucky Derby, winning it in 2010 with Super Saver, as well as the Belmont Stakes, which the stable won with Rags to Riches (2007) and Palace Malice (2013).

Rainbow pick six pool could hit $3 million on Sunday

ARCADIA, Calif. – The 20-cent Rainbow pick six will have a mandatory payout on Sunday at Santa Anita, with the pool expected to surpass $3 million.

The Rainbow portion of the bet has a carryover of $353,385 for Friday, which could grow to close to $500,000 if there is not a single winning ticket on Friday or Saturday. The Rainbow carryover portion of the bet is paid when there is one winning ticket or on a day with a mandatory payout.

ARCADIA, Calif. – Maxim Rate recorded a career-defining win in the Grade 1 Gamely Stakes for fillies and mares at 1 1/8 miles on turf at Santa Anita on Monday, her first win in a race at that level in her fifth appearance.

Trainer Simon Callaghan said on Wednesday that Maxim Rate “will be staying local” this year with the hope that she can accomplish enough in the summer and fall to merit a start in the Breeders’ Cup Filly and Mare Turf at Del Mar on Nov. 6.
