Turfway cancels Sunday card

Citing expected frigid temperatures and single-digit windchill, Turfway Park canceled live racing for Sunday, Jan, 20.

The track will remain open as usual for simulcasting, and live racing is expected to resume as scheduled Wednesday at 1:10 p.m.

Turfway also canceled Saturday's 12th race, the last on the card.

War Pass bounces back from touch of colic

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - There are bumps along every road, including the one that leads to the Kentucky Derby each spring.

Trainer Nick Zito encountered one of those obstacles, albeit a little one, on Saturday morning when he was forced to cancel a scheduled work for War Pass after the undefeated colt contracted a mild case of colic the previous afternoon.

Zito said he received a call that War Pass was showing signs of discomfort shortly after leaving Gulfstream Park around 5 p.m. on Friday. He let his veterinarian, Dr. Joseph Migliacci, explain the rest.

Nakatani breaks collarbone

ARCADIA, Calif. - Jockey Corey Nakatani will be sidelined for an undetermined period of time after sustaining a broken collarbone in a spill at Hollywood Park on Saturday morning, according to his agent, Craig O'Bryan.

Nakatani, 37, was working the unraced 3-year-old filly Bouweizase for trainer Kristin Mulhall when the accident occurred. Bouweizase was euthanized, according to racing officials.

O'Bryan said Nakatani was treated at Centinela Hospital and was released late Saturday morning.

Angliana shows he's still kicking

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - The horse whose career was deemed over last spring beat the gelding whose career seems endless in Saturday's Aqueduct Handicap.

Angliana, who needed surgery last April to correct a potentially life-threatening ailment, took the lead inside the eighth pole en route to a one-length victory in the $81,600 Aqueduct Handicap. Evening Attire, making his 10-year-old debut, ran down Judiths Wild Rush in the final stride to get second by a nose.

Not too late to get back in the saddle

NEW ORLEANS - At an age when most jockeys are retired or getting close, Martin Brown is coming into his own. At 63, Brown is coming off his best year as a jockey, and he has begun 2008 with two victories in two weeks.

Born in Opelousas, La., in 1944, Brown has spent his whole life working with racehorses, in many different capacities.

He rode match races around the Acadiana region from age 8 to 17, then left high school in 1962 and came to the Fair Grounds.

Womack, trainer, dies

Hulon Womack, who led the trainer standings at River Downs in Cincinnati and Latonia in northern Kentucky in the late 1960s and early 1970s, died Thursday in Edgewater, Ky. He was 75 and had continued to train actively until he was hospitalized in October.

Suit filed over ruling in Delta Jackpot

A lawsuit contesting the order of finish of the Grade 3, $1 million Delta Jackpot was filed against the Louisiana Racing Commission on Tuesday in Lake Charles, La., by the connections of the third-place finisher, Golden Yank, according to Byron Bonck, an attorney representing the horse's owner and trainer.

Bonck, who along with William Marshall Jr. represents Golden Yank's owner, the Millard R. Seldin Revocable Trust, and trainer, Gary Thomas, said he had no further comment on the case.

Crowd of 20,819 braves cold

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - A lot of people must have called in sick on Friday. Oaklawn Park drew 20,819 patrons for the first card of its 54-date season, which opened under sunny skies but cold weather. Temperatures were in the mid-40s throughout the afternoon, which was highlighted by a charging Carson's Legacy overtaking pacesetter Yonegwa in the stretch run of the $50,000 Dixieland Stakes for 3-year-olds.
