Racing to resume at Santa Anita

ARCADIA, Calif. - Santa Anita is expected to be able to conduct its 11-race program Saturday, which includes four Sunshine Millions stakes, after track maintenance crews worked through the night on a synthetic main track that has failed to drain in recent rain storms.

Santa Anita canceled racing on both Thursday and Friday because of major rain storms. The track has lost five days of racing this month because of wet conditions.

Weekend races are in jeopardy

ARCADIA, Calif. - Heavy rain and hail forced the cancellation of racing Thursday at Santa Anita because of continuing drainage problems with the track's synthetic Cushion Track surface. Racing on Friday was in doubt, and a dire weather forecast had track executives fretting over whether they could play host to the four California-based races of Saturday's Sunshine Millions.

The 1 1/16-mile race feature drew a field of seven.

This will be the easiest spot for Run Red Run since the 5-year-old gray gelding scored a first-level allowance win in open company at Belmont Park in September.

Glimmer of hope to avoid total washout

ARCADIA, Calif. - There was no racing again at Santa Anita on Friday, the prospects for Sunday were grim, and track management had already decided to cancel racing on Monday and Thursday of next week in order to reconstitute the synthetic Cushion Track surface whose draining problems have caused repeated cancellations and headaches at this meet.

But as of late Friday morning, Santa Anita officials were still holding out hope of racing on Saturday, a card that featured four Sunshine Millions races, including the $1 million Classic.

Too early to evaluate day cards

Turfway Park president Bob Elliston said that results were inconclusive regarding the ongoing experiment of daytime racing on Wednesdays and Thursdays, although there already have been benefits since the track made the switch after the first of the year.

"I'd say it's been up and down, with good days and bad days, although making any kind of decision about it would be premature," Elliston said last week.

Inability to train draws concern

ARCADIA, Calif. - The deluge of rain that led to the cancellation of racing at Santa Anita on Thursday and Friday put trainer Mel Stute's stable on the sidelines.

Stute planned to give his 16-horse stable the weekend off as Santa Anita officials deal with a drainage problem on the synthetic main track that has led to the cancellation of five racing days this month, and threatens to disrupt weekend racing.
