Pinehurst will start in Breeders' Cup Juvenile, Baffert says

Pinehurst, unbeaten in two starts, earned a 79 Beyer Speed Figure for his wire-to-wire win in the Del Mar Futurity.

ARCADIA, Cali. - Pinehurst, the winner of the Grade 1 Del Mar Futurity on Sept. 6, will have his next start in the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile at Del Mar on Nov. 5, trainer Bob Baffert confirmed Sunday.

Pinehurst is unbeaten in two starts – a maiden race at five furlongs on Aug. 1 and the $300,500 Del Mar Futurity at seven furlongs by 4 1/2 lengths. The BC Juvenile is run at 1 1/16 miles.

Since the Del Mar Futurity, Pinehurst has had two published workouts, including a half-mile in 51 seconds at Santa Anita on Sept. 27.

Lost rein no problem for Dr. Schivel, Prat in Santa Anita Sprint Championship

ARCADIA, Calif. - About the time Dr. Schivel was rolling down the stretch ahead of five rivals in Saturday’s Grade 2 Santa Anita Sprint Championship, trainer Mark Glatt noticed something amiss - jockey Flavien Prat was riding without a right rein.

“It wasn’t good,” Glatt said.

Prat expertly managed the dire situation, with Dr. Schivel winning by 3 1/4 lengths over Flagstaff. The victory confirmed Dr. Schivel’s status as California’s top contender for the Breeders’ Cup Sprint at Del Mar on Nov. 6.

Mister D. upsetter Two Emmys ships to Keeneland

Two Emmys, 27-1 winner of the Mister D. Stakes at Arlington, will run next in either the Sycamore Stakes or Keeneland Turf Mile.

Two Emmys, who upset Domestic Spending winning the Grade 1, $600,000 Mister D. Stakes on Aug. 14 at Arlington, was shipped from Arlington to Keeneland on Friday and will start there in one of two October races.

Trainer and co-owner Hugh Robertson said Two Emmys was nominated to the $750,000 Keeneland Turf Mile on Oct. 9, a race for which he is being considered, but is more likely to run in the $150,000 Sycamore Stakes over 1 1/2 miles on Oct. 22.

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Gulfstream Park issued a press release late Friday announcing the suspensions of five trainers found to have been in violation of the racetrack’s clenbuterol restrictions. Gulfstream Park enacted the rule at the beginning of the 2020/2021 Championship meet to “further address and implement improved safety, transparency, and accountability standards.”

New Tapeta surface gets cautiously positive reviews on opening day

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. – The Tapeta era at Gulfstream Park kicked off Thursday with four of the eight races on the opening-day program of the fall meet decided over the newly installed synthetic surface.

Trainer Kathleen O’Connell, the second-winningest female trainer in history and a Florida mainstay for the past several decades, had the honor of sending out the first winner over the Tapeta track when Emoji Guy captured the first race under jockey Edwin Gonzalez.

The trainer who won the marquee races at the 2020 Keeneland fall meet and the 2021 Kentucky Downs meet is based primarily at the Thoroughbred Training Center in Lexington, Ky.. In and of itself, that’s quite an upset.

Paulo Lobo, best known for winning the 2002 Kentucky Oaks with Farda Amiga, is the trainer of Ivar, winner of the $750,000 Shadwell Turf Mile at Keeneland last October, and Imperador, winner of the $715,105 Kentucky Turf Cup on Sept. 11 at Kentucky Downs.

Wayne Davis, 92, wins owner title at Louisiana Downs

Wayne T. Davis, the 92-year-old who races multiple Grade 3 winner Mocito Rojo, won the owner title at the Louisiana Downs meet, which closed Sept. 21. His stable won 25 races, according to a press release from the Bossier City, La., track.

Shane Wilson, who trains for Davis, won 55 races to rank as the meet’s leading conditioner. Carlos Lozada won the riding title with 84 wins and plans to ride next at Tampa Bay Downs before returning to Louisiana Downs, according to a press release.

Arapahoe stakes get purse bumps

Arapahoe Park has boosted the purse for the Gold Rush Futurity for 2-year-olds at six furlongs to $100,000, the Colorado track announced. The race’s purse for this meet had originally been set for $35,000.

The Gold Rush purse has been as high as $100,000, which helped it draw runners from a number of states, including California.

Remington Oaks winner Lady Mystify may return to Southwest

Lady Mystify paid $14 to win Sunday's Remington Park Oaks, her first stakes victory.

Lady Mystify could be headed back to the Southwest region following her win in the Grade 3, $200,000 Remington Park Oaks on Sunday.

The promising filly recently returned to her Santa Anita base, said trainer Peter Eurton.

“We’ll check her all out and see where we go from here,” he said.

Eurton said options include the $200,000 Zia Park Oaks on Nov. 23 in New Mexico and the $150,000 Mistletoe on Dec. 4 at Oaklawn Park in Arkansas.

“We like to spread her races out,” said Eurton.
