Relocation of state fair and track under discussion

The relocation of the Nebraska State Fair in Lincoln and its horse racing track was the topic of several hours of hearings and testimony before the Agriculture Committee of the Nebraska legislature on Tuesday.

Presentations for moving the state fair were presented by representatives from Grand Island, who want to relocate the fair to their town, and a Lincoln group known as Vision 2015, which is pushing for the state fair relocation to make way for an expansion by the University of Nebraska to create a technology innovation campus on that property.

Trainer Beattie a two-track leader

It doesn't seem to matter whether Stephanie Beattie runs her horses at Charles Town or Penn National. She's the hottest trainer at both Mid-Atlantic tracks.

Through Monday, Beattie led the trainer standings at Charles Town, with a 26-24 lead over second-place Jeff Runco, and at Penn National, where her five wins in the first two weeks of the meet put her one ahead of runners-up Mike Salvaggio and Dave Geist.

Overall, Beattie is 31 for 86 in 2008, which computes to a sizzling 36 percent.

Fortune Six carryover pool rising again

The 25-cent Fortune Six at Beulah Park is still alive and well, but its value is far from the $364,589.50 it paid out on Jan. 30, 2007. That payout, which was for a 25-cent ticket, was the highest ever for a wager of less than a dollar in the U.S.

The Fortune Six is like a pick six except the pool is paid out only if there is just one winning ticket. It also has a guaranteed minimum pool of $5,000. The bet was hit three days in a row in late January of this year, with actual betting pools between $1,500 and $1,800, forcing the track to inject its own money.

Mr Napper Tandy takes a shot

ARCADIA, Calif. - Mr Napper Tandy has developed a reputation as a troublemaker at trainer Jack Carava's stable. Second in two turf stakes at Santa Anita this winter, Mr Napper Tandy might have won one of those races with a little luck.

"He creates his own trouble," Carava said. "He doesn't like horses a lot. He gets a little mean and he can lay on horses."

If Mr Napper Tandy can stay out of trouble, Carava is hoping he can pull an upset in Saturday's $300,000 Frank Kilroe Mile, a Grade 1 race on turf.

Daaher aiming to rebound in Stymie

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - There are other races that are more prestigious and worth more money, but Saturday's $75,000 Stymie Handicap at Aqueduct may be the cure for whatever ails the Grade 1 winner Daaher.

Daaher ended last year as one of the more exciting horses in training after winning three consecutive races, including the Cigar Mile, in which he beat Breeders' Cup Sprint champion Midnight Lute. But in his 4-year-old debut in the Donn Handicap Feb. 2 at Gulfstream Park, Daaher faded to seventh, beaten 19 1/4 lengths as the 4-5 favorite.

Pure Clan works toward Honeybee

HOT SPRINGS, Ark. - The undefeated Pure Clan continues to impress in her works as she nears her season debut, which is set for March 16 in the Grade 3, $100,000 Honeybee Stakes at Oaklawn. Her latest drill came at about 7:30 a.m. Wednesday, when she breezed five furlongs in 1:00.40 under regular exercise rider Steve Schmelzel.

"I thought she did it easy," said Bob Holthus, who trains Pure Clan.

"Everything is going along about as good as we can ask."

Roussel back in the barn with three

NEW ORLEANS - Friday's eighth race features the beginning of a comeback when the appropriately named Recapturetheglory goes forward for trainer Louis Roussel III.

Two-day carryover at Aqueduct

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Favorites took a beating most of Wednesday at Aqueduct, resulting in a two-day pick-six carryover of $157,793 entering Thursday's card.

Odds-on favorites were beaten in the first three races and while they weren't part of the pick six sequence, it set a tone for the afternoon. There were only two winning favorites in the pick six, but a carryover was already assured by the time favored City in the Clouds ($9.50) won the nightcap.

Bias tilts toward Big Cap's closers

ARCADIA, Calif. - The surface on which the $1 million Santa Anita Handicap will be run Saturday will be almost as important as ability of the horses.

And the trainers of several Big Cap starters are hopeful that the latest variation of the synthetic main track at Santa Anita will produce equitable results in the 1 1/4-mile Big Cap, rather than another front-runner's paradise.

For much of the winter meet, late-runners such as Great Hunter have been fighting an uphill battle against the grain of a speed-friendly surface.
