Remington to have 15-race trial card

Because of an overwhelming number of entrants in trial races for the $200,000 Oklahoma Futurity and the $125,000 Oklahoma Derby, Remington Park will card 15 races on Saturday and begin its card at 4:45 p.m. Central, rather than the usual 6:25 p.m. The card is the largest at Remington Park since May 10, 2002, when 20 races were run.

Could this finally be Neko Bay's year?

ARCADIA, Calif. - Over the past two years, Neko Bay has threatened to become a top horse. Problem is, every time he appears ready to do something important, he disappears.

Neko Bay has compiled as many wins (three) as layoff lines in his six-race past performances. But sooner or later, the 5-year-old might put together an entire season for trainer John Shirreffs and owners Jerry and Ann Moss. If he does, look out.

"We've been very patient with him, hoping we can have a big campaign," Shirreffs said. "This would be the year."

Big Brown pointing toward Florida Derby

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - The Blue Grass is out and the Florida Derby has suddenly become the next target for Big Brown, the undefeated and as yet unchallenged 3-year-old sensation who took south Florida by storm Wednesday after cruising to a 12 3/4-length allowance victory at Gulfstream Park.

The Grade 1, $1 million Florida Derby will be run March 29.

Trainer Richard Dutrow Jr. said leaving the winner's circle Wednesday that the timing and Keeneland's Polytrack surface would be best suited for Big Brown's next start. But a few hours later, those plans had changed.

Cool Coal Man points to Blue Grass

HALLANDALE BEACH, Fla. - Trainer Nick Zito said Wednesday that in all likelihood Fountain of Youth winner Cool Coal Man will skip the $1 million Florida Derby and instead use Keeneland's Blue Grass Stakes as his final Kentucky Derby prep.

Cool Coal Man is perfect in two starts over the local strip, having won an entry-level allowance race prior to his half-length victory over Elysium Fields in the Grade 2 Fountain of Youth. Both those wins came at the same 1 1/8-mile distance as the Grade 1 Florida Derby.

Bridgmohan key part of potent combo

Chuck Saus
Shaun Bridgmohan, 28, will ride Pyro in Saturday?s Louisiana Derby, the marquee race of the Fair Grounds meet.

A quarter-mile into the seventh race last Friday at Fair Grounds, an older maiden named Visible Truth was locked in a heated pace battle after breaking from the rail in a six-furlong sprint. Visible Truth had raced once before, starting more than a year ago in California. Horses with speed coming back from long layoffs are notorious for going too fast and coming up short. Given their head for the first time in a long time, they tend to run themselves silly.

Circular Quay returns to the scene

Todd Pletcher has been a regular participant in the Louisiana Derby throughout the 21st century, finishing second in the 2000 edition with More Than Ready, third with Pollard's Vision in 2004, and second with Vicarage in 2005. Pletcher is back this year on Louisiana Derby Day - but not for the derby itself. Instead, he will start last year's Louisiana Derby winner, Circular Quay, in the $500,000 New Orleans Handicap. Pletcher also entered Magna Graduate in the New Orleans Handicap, and has horses for three other stakes races among the six on Saturday.

Wade back in the saddle

STICKNEY, Ill. - The story involving Lyndie Wade probably was no more than a couple inches away from ending in tragedy, but for now, the tale has taken a happy turn.

Wade, an apprentice jockey, came to Chicago from Louisiana last fall, and was having a strong Hawthorne meet when in the near-darkness on Nov. 30 his mount broke down at the top of the Hawthorne stretch, sending Wade careening to the cold, hard ground. Wade, who was only 16 at the time, lost consciousness, and remained in an induced coma for three days.

Turf Paradise: Martinez red-out

Jockey Seth Martinez continues his torrid streak. During the last five racing days (last Friday through Tuesday) Martinez won with 12 of his 31 mounts here, a winning average of 38 percent. He won 4 of the 9 races on the Feb. 29 card and then won three races on two subsequent cards and two races on the other two programs.

The hot streak puts Martinez in second place in the rider standings through Tuesday with 82 victories, just four behind Chris Landeros.

Sunland Park: Fearless Anthony sets another record

Fearless Anthony, a one-time $8,000 claimer and now a bona-fide allowance horse who may go on to even bigger and better things, posted a second straight track record here Tuesday, covering five furlongs in 55.86 seconds while defeating allowance company. The effort shaved .01 of a second off the previous mark, set by Absolutely True in the Budweiser Handicap here Feb. 9.

Fearless Anthony, trained by Chris Hartman, was coming off a track-record performance, as the 7-year-old sizzled 5 1/2 furlongs here in 1:01.62 on Feb. 12. He was ridden by Casey Lambert in both races.
