OZONE PARK, N.Y. - War Pass rebounded from his last-place finish in the Tampa Bay Derby, but Tale of Ekati did him just a little better, catching War Pass with about 20 yards to go to win Saturday's Grade 1, $750,000 Wood Memorial at Aqueduct by a half-length.

War Pass, who was pressed through the opening half-mile by Inner Light - acting as a rabbit for stablemate Court Vision - held second by 1 1/4 lengths over Court Vision. It was a neck back to Giant Moon, who was followed in the order of finish by Anak Nakal, Spurrier, Roman Emperor, Texas Wildcatter, and Inner Light.

Recapturetheglory leads every step

STICKNEY, Ill. – The last several months have not been the smoothest for jockey E. T. Baird. After a big summer at Arlington, Baird and major owner Frank Calabrese went separate ways, and Baird abandoned his new winter base at Fair Grounds after a week. He then showed up at Gulfstream the first week in February - but none of this has changed the essence of Baird. The man has made his reputation deftly guiding horses onto the lead at Chicago tracks - which is exactly what he did in engineering Recapturetheglory's upset victory Saturday in the Illinois Derby here at Hawthorne.

While Proud Spell, the 9-5 second choice, mustered a mild rally to finish third, Country Star was never a serious factor when finishing fifth as the even-money favorite.

Geier tries to keep rolling with Rags

STICKNEY, Ill. – Greg Geier wintered at Tampa Bay Downs last year. Nothing against Tampa Bay, which has admirably served any number of horsemen, but Geier is a Fair Grounds guy from a time even farther back than his long spell as the main Fair Grounds assistant to the late trainer Gene Cilio. Back in New Orleans again this winter, Geier won six races with a 15-horse stable, and now is reaping the benefits of spending several months on the lauded Fair Grounds main track.

Mitchell on the lead turning for home

ARCADIA, Calif. - The race for the training title at the Santa Anita winter-spring meeting may go down to the end of the meeting on April 20. None of the three leading contenders - Mike Mitchell, John Sadler, and Doug O'Neill - is ready to predict the result.

Through Friday, Mitchell led all trainers with 25 winners, two more than Sadler and O'Neill. Bobby Frankel was fourth with 21 wins.

Mitchell admits his two-win lead is tenuous, and that whether he wins the title depends on what races are used in the final weeks of the meeting.
