Giant Gizmo wins Alysheba; Chelokee injured

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Giant Gizmo splashed to a 3 3/ 4-length victory Friday in the Grade 3, $166,050 Alysheba Stakes at Churchill Downs, but the race was marred by the injury suffered by Chelokee, who broke his right front cannon bone in the stretch run.

It was an eerie, almost surreal occurance, because Chelokee, 4, is trained by Michael Matz. Matz trained Barbaro, who won the 2006 Kentucky Derby and then broke down two weeks later in the Preakness Stakes. There was Matz, in the mud and rain at Churchill Downs, watching helplessly as Chelokee was loaded onto a horse ambulance.

El Roblar back for more

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - El Roblar has won stakes over turf and dirt. The only problem for owner Jess Jackson's Stonestreet Stables and trainer Richard Mandella is considerable time seems to go by between such milestones.

When El Roblar starts in Saturday's $100,000 Inglewood Handicap at Hollywood Park, he will be seeking his third career stakes win and first since the Grade 3 Ack Ack Handicap last June.

In an injury-plagued career, the 6-year-old El Roblar has had only one start since the Ack Ack, a third in the Grade 2 Potrero Grande Handicap at Santa Anita on April 5.
