Louisiana Downs opens with 6 stakes

BOSSIER CITY, La. – Superior Storm stalked the early pace under defending Louisiana Downs riding champion John Jacinto before taking over in the stretch to win Saturday’s Fantasia Stakes, the first of six $50,000 stakes restricted to Louisiana-breds on the opening day program.

Trained by Richard Jackson, Superior Storm ($5.60) won for the fifth time from nine starts, and the 3-year-old daughter of Stormy Atlantic covered the six furlongs over a fast track in 1:11.70.

Matt's Broken Vow rallies

Matt's Broken Vow outran 3-5 favorite Bonanza in the final sixteenth to capture the $151,300 Marine Stakes for 3-year-olds at Woodbine.

Matt's Broken Vow and Bonanza both rallied on the far turn in the 1 1/16-mile test, and the former prevailed by a half-length, in a time of 1:44.28. He paid $12.10. Discreet Commander faded to third after setting honest fractions on a clear lead in the Grade 3 event.

Miner's Claim, the morning-line favorite, was scratched due to a bout of colic, according to trainer Mark Casse.

Speed duel aids D'wild Ride

With only four 3-year-old fillies in the $63,050 Just Smashing at Monmouth, you'd think they could have avoided a speed duel in the 5 1/2-furlong race. Tell that to those who bet the 9-10 favorite Mikeslittlegirl, who battled with the 12-1 Fist of the Fleet through a half-mile in 45.19 seconds, setting up the stalkers D'wild Ride and Sumptuous.

D'wild Ride, off slowly under Joe Bravo, took the lead in the stretch and kept Sumptuous at bay to win by a half-length. D'wild Ride, by D'wildcat, covered the distance in 1:03.22 and paid $6.80. Mikeslittlegirl finished third.

Lemon Drop Mom rebounds

Lemon Drop Mom took advantage of a major drop in class to romp in the $58,000 Winter Melody Stakes at Delaware Park.

Lemon Drop Mom ended her 3-year-old season last year with a 2-for-3 run in Delaware stakes, but in her three previous starts this year, all at Oaklawn, had finished sixth in the Pippin, fifth behind Hystericalady in the Grade 3 Azeri, and fourth to Zenyatta in the Grade 1 Apple Blossom.

Fires scores in stakes

Jockey Earlie Fires, 61, continued his spring renaissance at Arlington Park, winning the Reluctant Guest Stakes at Arlington Park aboard Forever Together.

Fires won for the second time on Saturday's card, giving him 9 victories at this meet from only 17 starts. But he had plenty of help Saturday from Forever Together, who ran big in her grass debut for trainer Jonathan Sheppard.

Nevada Worrier digs in

Nevada Worrier ($12.80) gave jockey Agapito Delgadillo a few worries down the stretch but dug in gamely to edge away from Devils Afleet to win the $61,900 Golden Bear Stakes at Golden Gate Fields by a neck.

Nevada Worrier sat behind Devils Afleet and Summer Haze early, moved four wide on the turn, and put his head in front in the lane.

Devils Fleet was a bit rank early. He broke a step slowly but rushed up to take the lead. Although headed in the lane in the six-furlong race for 3-year-olds, he refused to wilt until the final strides.

Romans repeats in Matt Winn

For the second straight year, Dale Romans trained the winner of the Matt Winn Stakes at Churchill Downs, winning Saturday with Eaton's Gift after taking the race last year with Spin Master.

Rebounding from a seventh-place finish in the Derby Trial, Eaton's Gift proved ultra game in defeating Devereux in the $108,800 Matt Winn.

Cowgirls Don't Cry gets revenge

Cowgirls Don't Cry, who had been beaten by Rite Moment and stablemate Wow Me Free in recent stakes at Aqueduct, turned the tables in Saturday's Shuvee Handicap at Belmont Park as Mike Luzzi posted career victory 2,999.

Luzzi put Cowgirls Don't Cry on the lead while pressed by Striking Tomisue through moderate fractions of 23.76 seconds, 47.67, and 1:12.55 in the one-mile race. Cowgirls Don't Cry widened her lead in midstretch and remained clear to score by 2 1/4 lengths over 3-2 favorite Rite Moment.

Dancing Allstar just too good

VANCOUVER – Heavily favored Dancing Allstar broke on top and then was under cruise control the rest of the way to win the $53,508 Emerald Downs Stakes at Hastings by 3 1/4 lengths. She paid $2.20 to win. There was no place or show wagering in the four-horse field.

With leading rider Mario Gutierrez in the irons, Dancing Allstar looked very comfortable setting fractions of 22.55 and 45.55 over a fast track before she drew off to post a final time of 1:10.66 for six furlongs.
