Sky Mom reels in Dreaming of Liz in Oaks

ARLINGTON HEIGHTS, Ill. - Steve Asmussen had been spotting Sky Mom in races up to about a mile, thinking that the 3-year-old filly would start losing her effectiveness at longer distances. But Sky Mom's closing second-place finish to Storm Mesa in the 1 1/16-mile Iowa Oaks last month started Asmussen thinking differently, and his plan to let Sky Mom run longer bore fruit Saturday at Arlington Park, where Sky Mom won the 1 1/8-mile Arlington Oaks over hard-trying pacesetter Dreaming of Liz.

Trifecta King rested and ready

DEL MAR, Calif. - First things first. Trifecta King may sound like a colt's name, but she's a filly. And a very good one.

So much so that trainer Doug O'Neill and the partnership that owns Trifecta King held her out of the $100,000 Landaluce Stakes at Hollywood Park on June 28 to allow her more time to recover from her win in the Cinderella Stakes at Hollywood Park on May 25.

Purses to be cut 3.5 percent for final three weeks

DEL MAR, Calif. - Del Mar announced Friday that purses will be cut by 3.5 percent for the final three weeks of the meeting, effective Aug. 13. The cuts impact a wide range of races, from two Grade 1 stakes to everyday races for maidens.

The reduction was caused by a downturn in ontrack business and stagnant account wagering business in California, track officials said. Michael Ernst, Del Mar's chief financial officer, said the cuts will amount to approximately $10,000 a day.
