Gufo points to Joe Hirsch Turf Classic as next start

Debra A. Roma
Gufo (right) was given a career-best Beyer Speed Figure of 104 for the victory in Saturday's Sword Dancer.

While it was a dramatic finish in Saturday’s Grade 1 Sword Dancer, there was less drama than usual for Christophe Clement, trainer of the winner Gufo.

Gufo rallied from between horses and held off a late charge from European invader Japan to win the $750,000 Sword Dancer by a neck. The fact Gufo kept a straight path - unlike some of his other races when he’d drift in or out - was what Clement liked most.

Clement said he instructed jockey Joel Rosario not to hit Gufo on his hind quarters.

Barbara D. Livingston
Jack Christopher earned a 92 Beyer Speed Figure in his debut win at Saratoga on Saturday.

On Saturday, at Saratoga, trainer Chad Brown won the Grade 2, $400,000 Ballston Spa Stakes with Viadera, but an hour earlier, the four-time Eclipse Award-winning trainer unleashed a good-looking 2-year-old colt in Jack Christopher.

Letruska will point to BC Distaff, will pass on Classic, trainer says

Barbara D. Livingston
Letruska was given a 101 Beyer Speed Figure for the triumph in the Personal Ensign at Saratoga on Saturday.

SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y. - After Letruska continued her dominance of the filly and mare handicap division with her popular and extremely game half-length triumph over Bonny South in Saturday’s Grade 1 Personal Ensign, the question that begged to be asked trainer Fausto Gutierrez the following morning was whether there's a temptation to start thinking about potential Horse of the Year honors and to point his filly to the Breeders’ Cup Classic, rather than the Distaff, this fall at Del Mar.

Gutierrez wasted little time giving his answer.

Several factors have led to the improved form, according to trainer Richard Baltas. He cited an operation for an undisclosed ailment, a wintertime rest, and the addition of blinkers.

Cancel took his days Saturday, Sunday, and Wednesday.
