Saskawea in River Memories off upset stakes win

ETOBICOKE, Ontario – Saskawea, who came to life with an upset win in the Avowal Stakes at Woodbine Sept. 27, will look to double up here in Saturday’s $100,000 River Memories.

The River Memories, a one-mile overnight stakes, represents the last black-type turf opportunity for fillies and mares at the meeting and attracted a field of eight.

Saskawea, an Ontario-bred 4-year-old, was making just her third start of the year when rallying at 13-1 for a three-quarter-length score in the Avowal, an overnight turf stakes for fillies and mares at seven furlongs.

Two look far above the rest

PHOENIX – Saturday’s divisions of the Arizona Thoroughbred Breeders Association Stakes at Turf Paradise give a couple of runners a chance to further separate themselves from the pack. Racetrack Barbie, a romping winner of her Oct. 3 trial for this race, heads a field of 10 2-year-old fillies in the $91,625 filly division, while Minnetonka Mist, a dazzling 17-length winner in his trial here Oct. 3, looks to validate that form against nine others in the $81,478 male division. Both events, which go as races 7 and 8 on the card, are at six furlongs.

Grand Couturier impresses with drill

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Grand Couturier, winner of the Sword Dancer Invitational and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, will ship to California on Tuesday for the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita.

ELMONT, N.Y. - On paper, Grand Couturier's half-mile breeze in 51.04 seconds over Belmont Park's inner turf course Wednesday morning in preparation for the Breeders' Cup Turf won't look like much. Visually, however, it may be as impressive a move as any horse will put in for the Breeders' Cup championships.

Radosevich still one shy of landmark

Trainer Jeff Radosevich has gone into a slump at just the wrong time. One winner short of his 1,000th career victory, he has gone 0 for his last 11 starters.

Since winning 3 of the first 5 races at Thistledown on Oct. 3, he has gone winless at this track with 28 consecutive starters, though nine of them finished second or third.

Radosevich scored win No. 999 at Mountaineer Park last Friday night. "I know that winner will come sooner or later," he said.

He's the leading trainer at Thistledown this meet with 65 winners, 10 more than Rodney Faulkner.

Hoosier awaits influx of casino money

Six weeks into the Hoosier Park meet, it still isn't clear how much the addition of a casino will help purses at the Anderson, Ind., track.

Hoosier used to receive purse supplements from the riverboat casinos in the state, but that arrangement has ended and revenue from the casino hasn't yet begun to supplement overnight purses.
