Big Brown tenacious on turf

Bill Denver/Equiphotos
In his final race before the Breeders' Cup Classic, Big Brown digs deep for a neck victory in Saturday's $500,000 Monmouth Stakes on the grass.

OCEANPORT, N.J. - When Big Brown ran down longshot Coal Play to win the Grade 1 Haskell here in August, many thought it was a sign that the Kentucky Derby and Preakness winner was tailing off after a long campaign.

Big Brown again got into a dogfight in Saturday's Monmouth Stakes, but the reviews should be more positive after the 3-year-old colt fended off three very talented and accomplished older horses to win the $500,000 turf race.

ELMONT, N.Y. - Music Note continued her love affair with Belmont Park, cruising to an 8 1/2-length win Saturday in the Grade 1, $250,000 Gazelle Stakes for 3-year-old fillies.

The Gazelle was her fourth straight win at Belmont, including three straight Grade 1's: the Mother Goose, the Coaching Club American Oaks, and now the Gazelle.

It was also a solid rebound effort from her loss by a head to Proud Spell in the Grade 1 Alabama at Saratoga.

Breathing room for juvenile stakes

The $1.75 million Turf Festival remains the centerpiece of the Hollywood Park autumn meet, which begins Oct. 29. But one additional week of racing this year - eight weeks through Dec. 21 - has allowed racing secretary Martin Panza to constructively tweak the timing of the jam-packed 2-year-old stakes program.

Eight stakes for 2-year-olds are run each fall at Hollywood, and when the meet is seven weeks long (every other year), the program sometimes trips over itself. Not this time.

Big races up next for 'Big Red'

ELMONT, N.Y. - Though Lieutenant Ron has raced only twice, he has done enough for trainer Kiaran McLaughlin to consider him an upper echelon 3-year-old.

"We kid about there's Big Brown and there's Big Red, and we have Big Red," McLaughlin said. "And we really feel that way; he's a top horse."
