Sumfun remains razor sharp

Sumfun drove to a 1 1/4-length win over Trouble Now in the $50,000 J.R. Straus Memorial at Retama Park on Saturday night. It was another seven lengths back in third to Prince Krimmer.

Sumfun ($3) was with the pace throughout, covering the six furlongs on a fast track in 1:10.67. Bobby Walker Jr. rode the winner for Carl Moore and trainer Bret Calhoun.

The Straus was Sumfun's fourth win in his last five starts, among his victories the $50,000 Route 66 at Will Rogers Downs.

Gallant Son proves much the best

Gallant Son ($7) saved his best for last, scoring an authoritative six-length victory in the $90,000 Gottstein Futurity at Emerald Downs on Saturday.

Getting a confident ride from jockey Leslie Mawing, Gallant Son sat in midpack early. He was fifth, 3 1/2 lengths behind Proud Nicholas. through the opening quarter-mile of the 1 1/16-mile race for 2-year-olds. He was fourth, four lengths back after the opening half-mile.

Marq French stretches out successfully

Marq French, who has won five sprint stakes, picked up his first two-turn stakes win on Saturday night, when he came back for a neck win over Oklahoma Tradition in the $100,000 Oklahoma Classics Day Classic at Remington Park.

The 1 1/16-mile race was one of eight Oklahoma-bred stakes worth more than $535,000.

Evening Attire retired at age 10

ELMONT, N.Y. - Evening Attire, the gutsy, grey 10-year-old gelding who won 15 races and $2.9 million in a career that spanned nine racing seasons, has been retired due to a minor ankle injury, his connections announced Sunday.

Evening Attire was forced to scratch out of the Point Given Stakes at Monmouth Park on Sept. 20 due to filling in a leg.

Gomez hits milestone aboard Hyperbaric

ARCADIA, Calif. - Hyperbaric gave jockey Garrett Gomez the 3,000th winner of his career Sunday in the $200,000 Oak Tree Mile Stakes. Another career milestone could await Gomez if Hyperbaric starts in the Breeders' Cup Mile here on Oct. 25, a race that Gomez won at Belmont Park in 2005 with Artie Schiller.

Street Hero prevails in Norfolk

ARCADIA, Calif.-Alex Solis will be the first to admit that his ride on Street Hero in Sunday's $250,000 Norfolk Stakes at Santa Anita was not pretty. “I think I got stopped about 10 times,” he said.

The mission was accomplished, though. Street Hero overcame traffic on the final turn to win the Grade 1 Norfolk by three-quarters of a length over Midshipman in a prep for the Breeders' Cup Juvenile here on Oct. 25.

Russell Road romps by a dozen lengths

The 2-year-old colt Russell Road ($7.20) solidified his status as the favorite for the $125,000 Vincent Moscarelli Memorial Stakes on Oct. 18 by rolling to a 12-length win in Saturday night's $51,300 Dr. Ernest Benner Stakes at Charles Town.

In his two starts since trainer James Casey put her on Lasix, Russell Road has won both times by a combined margin of more than 24 lengths. He covered 6 ½ furlongs on a sloppy sealed track in 1:18.46 under jockey Luis Perez.

Flash Traffic had to settle for second as the 6-5 favorite.

Wait a While, Stardom Bound punch Cup tickets

ARCADIA, Calif.-The Santa Anita turf course is playing a pivotal role in Wait a While's career. Saturday, she remained unbeaten in three starts on the course by winning the $400,000 Yellow Ribbon Stakes for the second time. She won the race in 2006.

Saturday's race was a prep to the Breeders' Cup Filly and Mare Turf here on Oct. 24. Wait a While earned an automatic berth to the Filly and Mare Turf, subject to the payment of entry fees.

“Hopefully, she'll go 4-for-4,” said Michael McCarthy, assistant trainer to Todd Pletcher. “Here and Saratoga, she loves.”

Well Armed joined stablemate Colonel John as a runner in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic on Oct. 25 by virtue of a gritty victory on Saturday in the Grade 1, $500,000 Goodwood Stakes at Santa Anita's Oak Tree meeting.

Curlin pulls away from Wanderin Boy on Saturday on his way to his second consecutive victory in Belmont's Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup.

ELMONT, N.Y. - The Breeders' Cup Classic became a real possibility for Curlin on Saturday after the reigning Horse of the Year splashed his way to the record books, winning the Jockey Club Gold Cup at Belmont Park.

Curlin rallied past Wanderin Boy inside the eighth pole en route to a three-quarter-length victory. The $450,000 first-place prize enabled Curlin to become North America's all-time leading money earner. His total of $10,246,800 moved him past Cigar, who finished with $9,999,815.
