Fabulous Strike uncatchable

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Trainer Todd Beattie still doesn't think the public has seen the best of Fabulous Strike. But if Beattie can keep the 5-year-old Fabulous Strike sound and healthy, perhaps we will.

Fabulous Strike certainly looked good Thursday, taking control soon after the start and leading all the way to record a 1 1/2-length victory in the $111,200 Fall Highweight Handicap before a Thanksgiving Day gathering of 3,239 at Aqueduct. He's So Chic rallied to get second by 3 1/2 lengths over Ferocious Fires.

Fair Grounds: Sok Sok returns with a win

Okay, okay, we get it now: Sok Sok likes the Fair Grounds.

Eleven months after he won the Sugar Bowl Stakes by almost eight lengths last season, Sok Sok won the Thanksgiving Handicap on Thursday in New Orleans. The margin this time was smaller, about three lengths, but Sok Sok looked just about as good, going six furlongs in a swift 1:09.98 while sprinting clear from his stablemate Devereux in the final furlong.

Extra distance should boost Madeo in derby

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - After Madeo finished a troubled second in the Grade 2 Oak Tree Derby at Santa Anita on Oct. 25, trainer John Shirreffs could only shrug philosophically.

"It's turf racing, isn't it?" he said.

Madeo was blocked for about a sixteenth of a mile in early stretch and closed well to finish a neck behind Muny. The loss did little to diminish Madeo's status among California's 3-year-olds. He remains the horse to beat in Sunday's $500,000 Hollywood Derby at Hollywood Park.

McPeek has young talent as priority

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Ken McPeek figures he can have "leftover turkey dinner or something" when he takes a rare break Saturday at Churchill Downs. With horses in 10 of the 12 Stars of Tomorrow races, McPeek will be a busy fellow, a testament to how his stable is overflowing with quality 2-year-olds.

McPeek cut his racing teeth on claiming horses, but it has been about 15 years since he shifted emphasis to buying and developing young horses. Tejano Run, Repent, Take Charge Lady were just some of the 2-year-olds to win major races for McPeek and his clients.

Minshall barn has a hint of its old presence

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - It has been a decade and more since Barbara Minshall was on top of the world as the trainer of stars such as Mt. Sassafras, Bold Ruritana, Kiridashi, and Stephanotis.

But Minshall quietly has been putting together a decent campaign this year and will be looking to get into the stakes win column with Parabola entered for Saturday's $125,000 Kingarvie and Dance for Us slated for Sunday's $150,000 Ontario Lassie.

Carlsbad, Clean Hit headline futurity

PHOENIX - Carlsbad will likely ride the power of her big Turf Paradise maiden win into the favorite's role in the filly division of the $40,000 Arizona Breeders Futurity on Saturday. Things look more difficult in the colt-and-gelding division, as big debut winner Clean Hit collides with recent impressive winner Hidden Bounty and the promising Edmond. Both races are for Arizona-bred 2-year-olds at six furlongs.

A field of 10 is entered in the filly division; 11 passed the entry box for the male version. They go as races 7 and 8 on a nine-race program.
