With no out-of-state betting, Beulah handled a total of $3,682 on its first race Wednesday. Beulah's 48-day meet, which began Tuesday, is scheduled to run through Dec. 20.

Grand Couturier impresses with drill

Adam Coglianese/NYRA
Grand Couturier, winner of the Sword Dancer Invitational and Joe Hirsch Turf Classic, will ship to California on Tuesday for the Breeders' Cup Turf at Santa Anita.

ELMONT, N.Y. - On paper, Grand Couturier's half-mile breeze in 51.04 seconds over Belmont Park's inner turf course Wednesday morning in preparation for the Breeders' Cup Turf won't look like much. Visually, however, it may be as impressive a move as any horse will put in for the Breeders' Cup championships.

Carryovers for pick six, Super High Five

ARCADIA, Calif.-There are carryovers in the pick six and the Super High Five at Santa Anita on Thursday, and it's the Super High Five, introduced last December, that has the larger carryover.

The $1 Super High Five, which requires bettors to correctly select the first five finishers of the last race, has a carryover of $211,064. An upset win by Ata Benchmark ($71.40) in Wednesday's eighth race triggered a carryover for the second consecutive day.

Golden Gate cancels Albany

Golden Gate Fields canceled Saturday’s scheduled $50,000 Albany Stakes due to a lack of entries.

The six-furlong stakes race for fillies and mares would have been run with only four betting interests, with the Greg Gilchrist-trained High Resolve and Victorina running as a coupled entry. Only five runners entered the race.

Earlier in the week, connections for stakes winners Gadget Queen, Kalookan Dancer and Unspoken Word indicated they would run.

Radosevich still one shy of landmark

Trainer Jeff Radosevich has gone into a slump at just the wrong time. One winner short of his 1,000th career victory, he has gone 0 for his last 11 starters.

Since winning 3 of the first 5 races at Thistledown on Oct. 3, he has gone winless at this track with 28 consecutive starters, though nine of them finished second or third.

Radosevich scored win No. 999 at Mountaineer Park last Friday night. "I know that winner will come sooner or later," he said.

He's the leading trainer at Thistledown this meet with 65 winners, 10 more than Rodney Faulkner.

Hoosier awaits influx of casino money

Six weeks into the Hoosier Park meet, it still isn't clear how much the addition of a casino will help purses at the Anderson, Ind., track.

Hoosier used to receive purse supplements from the riverboat casinos in the state, but that arrangement has ended and revenue from the casino hasn't yet begun to supplement overnight purses.

Kelly's Landing runs off long layoff

LEXINGTON, Ky. - Kelly's Landing is proof that you can't keep a good horse down. In a 24-race career dating to April 2004, the Summerplace Farm homebred has managed to knock out more than $1.8 million amid a series of stops and starts.

Kelly's Landing has had four layoffs of at least 6 1/2 months amid a career that peaked with a victory in the $2 million Dubai Golden Shaheen in March 2007. The latest layoff ensued after the May 31 Aristides Handicap at Churchill Downs, when the 7-year-old gelding finished a distant fourth.

Vella has trio for two stakes

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Danny Vella won both the River Memories and Maple Leaf with Like a Gem at Woodbine last fall when the races were run two weeks apart.

Vella won't be able to pull off quite the same coup this year, since the River Memories and the Maple Leaf are being run on consecutive afternoons, and will have to try to pull off the double with different fillies here this weekend.

Pleasant Review and It's True Love are Vella's entrants for Saturday's $100,000 River Memories, a one-mile overnight turf stakes for fillies and mares.

It's time for Bredar to say good-bye

BOSSIER CITY, La. - Saturday not only marks the conclusion of the 2008 season at Louisiana Downs, but also the end of Doug Bredar's tenure as racing secretary. Bredar assumes the same position at Gulfstream Park, which begins its next season in early January.

Bredar's two years at Louisiana Downs have been successful. In a national environment that has not been kind to the fortunes of most tracks, Louisiana Downs has seen an increase in handle in each of the last two years, including this season's 3 percent rise.
