Chickster wires for 11th win of year

Chickster jumped out to the lead in Friday's fourth race at Turf Paradise and coasted home a 3 1/2-length victor, giving the 7-year-old gelding 11 victories for the 2008 season, which may bring him honors as the nation's winningest Thoroughbred of the year.

Sent off the 3-5 favorite in the six-furlong event for $4,000 claimers, Chickster cruised home in 1:08.67, beating Preachintothechoir, with Walter third in the field of seven. From the barn of leading trainer Justin Evans, Chickster notched his 20th win in 44 career starts. He paid $3.20.

Claiming action slows to a crawl

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - On most racing days, trainer Bill Spawr can be found on a rail near the paddock, making notes in his program on the condition of horses as they head to the racetrack. Spawr, a trainer with a large number of claimers in his stable, has not had much opportunity to put the information to use of late.

Along with numerous other trainers in Southern California, Spawr has cut back on the number of horses he has claimed. From his perspective, owners have not expressed the same enthusiasm for acquiring race-ready horses as they have in past seasons.

Derby an end for some, a beginning for others

LOS ALAMITOS, Calif. - The $189,200 Southern California Derby at Los Alamitos on Sunday is the final major race of the year at the famed Quarter Horse track. From trainer Scott Willoughby's perspective, the Southern California Derby is the start of the 2009 season.

Willoughby is convinced that Thinking First, the colt he starts in the 400-yard race, can not only win on Sunday, but show that he will play a major role in the older horse division next year.

"I think he'll be one of our best horses next year," Willoughby said.

By the Light almost unbeatable in sprints

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - By the Light is 4 for 5 in races run at six furlongs. And since the only horse to beat her at that distance, Indian Blessing, is not entered in Sunday's $65,000 Foil Stakes at Aqueduct, By the Light looks well positioned to make it 5 for 6 at the sprint distance.

Japan trip its own reward

OZONE PARK, N.Y. - Though Tin Cup Chalice finished a disappointing 13th in the Japan Cup Dirt last weekend, trainer and part-owner Michael Lecesse said he was glad he made the trip.

"It was a great experience, I'd love to do it again," Lecesse said Thursday from his home in Farmington, N.Y. The Japan Racing Association, he said, "is great - everything they do is second to none. They really know how to take care of their horsemen, their racing surface. The racing program is beautiful. They bet $160 million in the one race."

Santa Anita cuts overnight purses

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Fearing a downturn in mutuel handle because of poor economic conditions, Santa Anita has cut overnight purses by approximately 10 percent for its winter-spring meeting that begins Dec. 26.

The purse reduction is the latest in a string of stinging cuts for Southern California horsemen in recent months. During the summer, Del Mar cut purses. At the current Hollywood Park meeting, purses were cut before the meeting began Oct. 29 and twice since.
