Joel Rosario scored his 13th win of the Kentucky Downs meet guiding Castle Leoch to victory in a maiden race Sunday.

Even with the Saturday and Sunday cards at Kentucky Downs still remaining, Joel Rosario already has broken the record for most wins by a jockey at a meet.

Rosario rode 13 winners through the first four days of the meet, including two Thursday. The former record of 12 was held by Rafael Bejarano (2004) and Florent Geroux (2015, 2016).

“We’ve been blessed the days we’ve been here, great opportunities,” said Rosario.

Rosario won five race on each of the first two days of the meet.

Chief steward addresses Kentucky Downs scratch controversy

LOUISVILLE, Ky. – Chief steward Barbara Borden said proper protocol was followed in the last race Wednesday at turf-only Kentucky Downs in south-central Kentucky when bettors who backed a heavily favored Godolphin entry came away frustrated when one of the horses was scratched.

Soft Touch was scratched at the gate after flipping over, but unlike in other states such as New York where the remaining half of the entry runs for purse money only, there is no such provision in Kentucky, said Borden.

Van Dyke feeling right at home in California

Drayden Van Dyke rode Ginobili to victory in the Pat O’Brien at the Del Mar meet and will be aboard in the BC Dirt Mile.

The Del Mar summer meeting ended at midday on Wednesday for jockey Drayden Van Dyke, nearly two days after the last race was run.

“I stayed a couple of extra days to hang out,” Van Dyke said.

It is easy to see why Van Dyke lingered in the vicinity of the San Diego County track. Aside from the beach scenery, the Del Mar meeting was Van Dyke’s first meet in California since the spring.

Affable Monarch's debut win has connections considering Champagne Stakes

Bill Denver/Equi-Photo
Affable Monarch wins a maiden sprint on Monday looking like a colt who wants to go long.

While Double Thunder won the $200,000 Sapling Stakes on Saturday, earning a 73 Beyer Speed Figure and a start next month in the Grade 1 Breeders’ Futurity at Keeneland, another 2-year-old at Monmouth caught the eye last weekend.

That was Affable Monarch, a colt bred to run long who stormed home from the back of the pack to win a maiden sprint, race 4 on Monday, by more than six lengths, going away. Affable Monarch got a modest Beyer of 60 but made a stronger visual impression and might better suit route racing than sprints.
