Autrey and owners practicing less is more

NEW ORLEANS – Cody Autrey’s style of aggressive claiming has earned him a large number of fans and detractors, along with his many wins. Though his first weekend results at Fair Grounds were impressive, with 4 wins from 9 starts, Autrey seems intent on slightly altering his game plan by claiming fewer horses and buying better ones.

Asmussen carries Quinonez to the top

Jockey Luis Quinonez has won titles at Oaklawn Park and Canterbury, but never at his home track of Remington Park, where he has ridden on a regular basis since 1989. That should soon change. With just three weeks left in the meet, Quinonez has a double-digit advantage in the standings and the continued support of leading trainer Steve Asmussen.

"I can taste it now," said Quinonez, 41, who lives in Jones, Okla., with his wife, Gedda, and their four children. "It would be nice. This is home. If I can hang on to it, it would be very special."

Marina Ballerina opts for Bessarabian

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Sam DiPasquale nominated Marina Ballerina to both Saturday's Kennedy Road and Sunday's Bessarabian here at Woodbine.

Both stakes offer a purse of $150,000, but Marina Ballerina would have been facing males in the Grade 3, six-furlong Kennedy Road while the seven-furlong Bessarabian was for fillies and mares only.

And while he was tempted by the Kennedy Road's shorter distance, DiPasquale has elected to keep Marina Ballerina with her own gender in the Bessarabian.

Few willing to face Commentator

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Churchill Downs racing officials are expecting a small field, with maybe only as many five horses challenging Commentator when the annual fall-meet highlight, the Grade 2 Clark Handicap, is run Friday for the 135th time.

Commentator, the speedy New York-bred gelding with 13 wins from 20 starts, will be the highweight and favorite in the $400,000 Clark, one of four Grade 2 races that will close out the 26-day fall meet during the Thanksgiving weekend. Weights for the 1 1/8-mile race were to be released Saturday, with entries taken and drawn Tuesday.

Geordie has 'em over a barrel

Geordie will try to make it two in a row against Indiana-bred 2-year-olds when he faces 11 others in the $100,000 Indiana Stallion Stakes at Hoosier Park on Sunday, the closing day of the meet.

Geordie won at first asking Sept. 19 at Hoosier Park, defeating Indiana-breds by 3 1/2 lengths. The gelding then ran third in the Hillsdale on Oct. 12 before winning the Indiana Futurity at Hoosier by 4 1/2 lengths. The Indiana Stallion should be an easier spot for Geordie, as every horse in the race is not only Indiana-bred, but also sired by a registered Indiana sire.
