Affectionately sets up for Yet Again

Yet Again, the longest shot in a scratched-reduced field of four, rallied from well off the pace under Orlando Bocachica to win Sunday's $66,120 Affectionately Stakes by 2 3/4 lengths at Aqueduct.

Are We Dreamin finished second, 11 1/2 lengths ahead of Spritely, the 3-5 favorite who set the early pace. Rap Tale was last.

Originally drawn with six, the Affectionately lost Successful Sarah and Point Me To It to scratches. Point Me To It scratched after showing signs of developing colic, according to the stewards.

Chocolate Candy takes Cal Derby with ease

ALBANY, Calif. - Odds-on Chocolate Candy ($3.60) lived up to his advanced billing, capturing the $100,000 California Derby at Golden Gate Fields on Saturday.

Making what announcer Michael Wrona called "a mouth-watering move" into the lane, Chocolate Candy pulled clear through the stretch, winning the 1 1/16-mile race by 1 3/4 lengths over Axel Foley in 1:43.98. Both runners were coming out of the Grade 1 CashCall Futurity at Hollywood Park on Dec. 20.

Previously undefeated Merus Miami was third another 2 1/2 lengths back.

Nownownow gives Biancone first comeback win

ARCADIA, Calif. - Nownownow was one of the more promising members of Patrick Biancone's stable when he began a one-year suspension for possession of an illegal substance in October 2007.

Nearly 15 months later, Biancone is back in training, and Nownownow remains at the top of that list.

Saturday, Nownownow gave Biancone his first winner since he returned from suspension last fall in the $150,000 San Fernando Stakes at Santa Anita. The victory was a surprise to bettors, who sent off Nownownow as an 18-1 outsider.

Bingham cruises in Cotton Fitzsimmons

Bingham dominated Saturday's $75,000 Cotton Fitzsimmons Handicap at Turf Paradise.

Owned by Dennis Weir and trained by Kevin Lewis, Bingham, a 4-year-old son of Kentucky Derby winner Monarchos, stalked the pace in the mile turf event, took over into the lane, and drew clear to win by three lengths under Glenn Corbett. Highland Games rallied to be second, while Canard came from last in the field of nine to get third. Majestic Diamond, a well-regarded Southern California invader, sat back, made a run into the lane, but flattened out to finish seventh.

Southern Yankee holds on in Genesis

Southern Yankee, under Ricardo Feliciano, controlled the early pace in Friday night's $50,000 Genesis Stakes at Delta Downs before digging in and holding off a late charge from favored On the Menu to prevail by a neck. Smoking Again turned in an even effort to finish 4 1/4 lengths farther back in third in the two-turn seven-furlong contest for 3-year-old fillies.

Suave Jazz ends win drought in Fire Plug

Suave Jazz ($4.60) snagged his first victory since November 2007 in Saturday's $50,000 Fire Plug Stakes at Laurel Park, drawing away to a two-length win in the six-furlong race under Jeremy Rose.

Suave Jazz was rated in last place in the field of six as Night Stand led through fractions of 22.40 and 45.86 seconds, pressed by Taint So. Rose angled out his mount in upper stretch, they moved to the front with a sixteenth to go, and increased their lead to the wire as the runner-up, Yes It's the Truth, held off the 4-year-old Springs Road by a neck.

Maiden draws in, then draws off by 6

When entries were taken Wednesday for Saturday's $50,000 Cincinnati Trophy Stakes at Turfway, Tacky Cat appeared an unlikely starter, much less a winner.

An also-eligible in an overflow field, she needed two scratches simply to gain a starting position. But receive them she did, and Tacky Cat drew into the field.

The Pamplemousse takes advantage

ARCADIA, Calif. - The Pamplemousse got a gift Saturday in the Grade 3, $100,000 San Rafael Stakes at Santa Anita, and he was not about to give it back. He had the lead ceded to him when Brother Keith bore out badly on the first turn, and from that point on, The Pamplemousse never looked back. He held safe odds-on favorite Square Eddie to win the first two-turn graded stakes of the year for 3-year-olds pointing to the Santa Anita Derby and then the Kentucky Derby.

Head bob puts Rated Fiesty in front

Rated Fiesty got the bob to win the $50,000 American Beauty by a head over 3-2 favorite Palanka City at Oaklawn Park on Saturday. With the win, she gave her trainer, Steve Asmussen, his fifth win in the six-furlong race for fillies and mares. It was another 2 1/4 lengths back in third to Maren's Meadow.
