ELMONT, N.Y. - Back on conventional dirt, Charitable Man was back to his winning ways Saturday, putting forth a dominant effort in the $200,000 Peter Pan Stakes, one that could make him a factor in the Belmont Stakes in four weeks.

La Chica Rica is back to defend her title Tuesday in the $75,000 Hancock County Handicap for fillies and mares at Mountaineer Casino Racetrack and Resort.

"I'm looking forward to running her," said trainer Crystal Pickett. "She looks good. She's training super."

The win last year was the middle victory in a five-race winning streak, a run that propelled the mare to an excellent season with earnings of $233,526.

One Smokin' Lady was all out to just last by a neck in the $100,000 Inaugaral on opening night at Presque Isle Downs on Friday. Jockey Frankie Pennington saved every inch of ground in the six-furlong event and took the lead in upper stretch. One Smokin' Lady, a 3-year-old daughter of Smoke Glacken, then gamely held off the late charge of Onearmedbandit. Ridden by Erick Rodriguez, Onearmedbandit was gaining on the outside in the field of six 3-year-old fillies. Southern Yankee set the early pace but faded in the stretch and finished third, three lengths behind the top two.

ETOBICOKE, Ontario - Trainer Josie Carroll may be suffering from an embarrassment of riches on the filly and mare front this season.

"I have a barnful of really nice fillies this year," said Carroll, just before entering Smart Surprise and Authenicat in Sunday's Grade 3, $150,000 Hendrie at 6 1/2 furlongs.

Serenading, who was entered in a 1 1/16-mile classified allowance race that failed to fill for two consecutive days before being scrapped, will be a going concern this year going long.

INGLEWOOD, Calif. - Strawberry Tart zipped through two sprints at Oaklawn Park this year, winning both races by a combined 19 3/4 lengths. The performances justify starting her in Sunday's $100,000 Railbird Stakes at Hollywood Park, although they may not afford her much respect from bettors.

With two undefeated rivals in the Railbird field - the four-time stakes winner Carlsbad and two-time winner Witty - Strawberry Tart may only be the third choice in the betting of the Grade 3 race for 3-year-old fillies at seven furlongs.

Churchill Downs canceled the last five races on the 10-race Friday twilight program because of heavy rain and the threat of further severe weather in the Louisville, Ky., area.

The fourth and fifth races were run under trying conditions before officials decided to cancel the balance of the card, citing "the interest of equine and human safety," according to an announcement made by race-caller Mark Johnson.

GRAND PRAIRIE, Texas - Trainer Cash Asmussen has been all over the map with his 2-year-olds recently. He sent out the first three finishers in the $50,000 Manor Downs Thoroughbred Futurity last month near Austin, Texas, with one of those horses set to run back in upcoming trials for the Texas Thoroughbred Association Sales Futurity at Lone Star Park.

ELMONT, N.Y. - While seven of the 19 horses that ran in the Kentucky Derby are being pointed to next Saturday's Preakness Stakes, one Derby also-ran is already looking ahead to the $1 million Belmont Stakes on June 6.

Chocolate Candy, who finished fifth in the Kentucky Derby, arrived at Belmont Park earlier in the week and is bedded down in Barn 20 along with two other horses trained by Jerry Hollendorfer.

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - Trainer Greg Tracy is hoping for a strong race from Dandy Dora in the $50,000 Emerald Downs Stakes at Hastings on Sunday.

Dandy Dora will be making her first start since she finished fourth in the $75,000 Permian Basin at Zia Park in New Mexico last October. According to Tracy she came out of the race with a small chip on her ankle and underwent surgery to take the chip out.

Charles Town canceled Friday night's program of live racing due to heavy rain and poor track conditions.

It's the second straight program that was washed out and the fourth time since last Sunday that at least one race at the West Virginia oval was called off.

On May 3, the ninth race was canceled. The track ran three races on Wednesday night before canceling the final six scheduled races.
